2. I like it!
I would just like to see a map that magnified or shrunk blue/red areas according to population. The vertical thing is good, but it isn't dramatic enough to get across that these tiny little blue areas aren't so tiny if you magnify them based on population.

Though I'm a geographer, I don't have access to the ESRI software I used to before our company went under. I also don't have autocad or any good stuff on my computer here at home. If anyone could do this, it would be fantastic!

4. Hi from the blue triangularish county in the lower left corner of CO
Ask me if I miss living on that big red spike in Utah. Yesterday I started to make lemonade out of my lemons by realizing that if worse comes to worst, I can count on 60 percent of my neighbors to do the right thing or at least be rational - in sharp contrast to that big red spike. And I realized that's really important to me, and I'm never going back to that icky red spiky place.

21. To answer your question...
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A6471-2004Aug16.html

snip

KETCHUM, Idaho, Aug. 16 -- Idaho voted 67.2 percent for George W. Bush in 2000 and is sometimes called the most Republican state in the country, but idyllic Blaine County, where John F. Kerry is spending a few quiet days this week, is very much up for grabs, even if all that is at stake is pride.

Four years ago, this blue enclave in the reddest of red states was the only one of Idaho's 44 counties to vote for Al Gore, who won here by 220 votes. Bill Clinton narrowly won Blaine in 1992 and 1996, despite losing the state by large margins both times.

28. Hi--blue part of CA abutting the red bluffs
Smack dab in the middle of the central valley. Everything west of me is blue, Sacramento just east is blue but only about an inch deep and it juts out into the red. Eastern California counties have the scary distinction of being both red and populous and contiguous... so much for my comfort!

11. Check out the big red splotch in the northern center of Maine!
This is hilarious - NOBODY LIVES THERE! It's all parks and mountains and woods. Maybe they dug up one or two drunk crazy old beaver trappers who stumbled into the voting booth and picked "BUSH" because they thought they were picking the lineup for a peep show.

Other than that and a couple of insignificant red smears in Vermont/New Hampshire/Connecticut, the rest of New England is blue. God, how I love it here.

18. Here is another good one from Princeton
"...Of course, blue is for the democrats, red is for the republicans, and green is for all other. Each county's color is a mix of these three color components in proportion to the results for that county.

Counties shown in black represent either missing election data or a mismatch between the US Census data and the USA Today data. For example, the New England states' election return data is given for each municipality and/or district rather than for each county. Hence, it couldn't be easily matched with the county boundaries....
