My idea for gay marriage
If you can't beat the fundies, confuse the hell out of them. If you are running for office, declare that you want marriage out of the state completely. Legal issues can be provided for couples gay or straight, but marriage is up to the religious institutions and the religious institutions alone. When your Republican opponent attacks you for being pro gay marriage, run attack ads saying:

"Such and such wants the STATE to define marriage, and not the churches. Such and such is a BIG GOVERNMENT LIBERAL, JUST LIKE TED KENNEDY!"

Just so crazy it might work.

1. Michael Kinsley proposed this on Slate in 2003:

3. Man
I've been saying this for AGES.

Civil Unions only. There is not state-recognized marriage.

4. Awesome! I've been preaching that for two years now.
I'm glad someone else is ready to carry the message: Legally binding unity for all - marriage up to the church.

After all, I know many athiests that get "married" at the courthouse, while many of my gay friends attend church every Sunday but aren't afforded the legality the athiests are.

I say, do away with marriage altogether. Bind it legally - like a contract - then let the evangelicals have their little party with the rings and the cake and the vows and all that bullshit.

5. Yup.
Why should the state sanction a religious ritual? I think that we should pass laws and/or sue in every state to accomplish this.

KEEP THE GOVERNMENT OUT OF MY RELATIONSHIPS! ;)
