I just convinced my Republican boss to join an anti-fundamentalist group! |
|
Hi all!
I was talking with my boss--a lifelong Republican who is horrified at the power of the Christian fundamentalists--and told him about the group Americans United for Separation of Church and State. While we were sitting in his office talking, he immediately went to the website, whipped out his credit card, and donated $100!
He also said he wants to join the ACLU. I also told him about People for the American Way.

4. I think they are waking up. |

I know some of them are still in denial and are trying to spin it as if it isn't real, but I can clearly sense that many of them were completely blindsided by the "moral values" agenda.
They didn't realize that when the media said Bush was playing to his base, they meant the 700 club and the Westboro Baptist Church, not regular patriotic conservatives. They certainly weren't aware of how many of them there are or how powerful they have become.

There ARE moderate Republicans out there who are absolutely horrified at Bush and the coming theocracy. All we have to do to win them to the Democratic fold is take a little bit of time to talk to them, empathize with their concerns, and gently nudge them in the right direction.
For example, when you come across a Republican disheartened by Bush and the religious fundamentalists, you might casually mention "Sounds like it's time to join Americans United for Separation of Church and State!" They might never have heard of the group before and, because of you, they might just decide to make a contribution and join the fight against the religious zealots and neocons.
My boss had never heard of Americans United before I mentioned it to him.

6. I think this will happen more and more.... |

Once news breaks to all the non-fundi types (re: gun owners) that they voted with the Jesus freaks - I think they'll get scared. I think there were a lot of repubs who voted * for war and war alone. This religion stuff is gonna open their eyes.
I already had an email petitioning for prayer in public schools. I actually was glad - get the word out that they're pushing this shit. The sooner it might be over with!
