So, Peak Oil DU'ers; and Global Warming DU'ers, too...
what are we thinking?

I basically figured this was going to be a crucial election. A sort of last ditch attempt to stop the run away freight train.

I think we all know something big and bad is going to happen. Whether it's Krugman's Argentina fiscal crisis or oil spiking and peaking, or the constitutional act making this country a theocracy.

Grover Norquist basically said that the GOP would work to destroy the ability of the dems to function. There's no belief in bipartisanship there.

So while I'd like to believe we can fight back, is there all of this time available to build this infrastructure?

I'm seriously beginning to doubt it.

The comforting feeling of quasi-nihilism sweeping over many are coming to me as well.

1. Time's up.
Global warming is here, and global CO2 levels seem to be going up even faster than expected. Even if the US embraced Kyoto it's much too little, way too late.

And Peak Oil? I believe it's here. Now. Matthew Simmons is a major * advisor, and HE believes Peak is here.

Had we listened to President Carter, we might have had a chance to soften the landing. We don't anymore.

I'm sorry for being so negative...I had so hoped John Kerry would win.

5. Now, huh?
Don't worry about being negative. I really quite expected as much. But do you have an exact link or quote on where you got it that Simmons believes it's here now?

7. Want a link? Sure, links we got!
You can take a look at the powerpoint slides for all of his speeches at http://www.simmonsco-intl.com/research.aspx?Type=msspeeches

It may take a little while to go through them, but it makes many things clear.

A recent one is here: http://www.simmonsco-intl.com/files/HBS%20Energy%20Symposium.pdf

Here's a quote from one of the slides:

– Energy demand is growing at a rapid rate.
– Virtually all spare energy capacity is gone.
– New energy supplies cannot keep pace
with demand.
– Oil and gas price explosion was/is real.
– “Fear Factor” is justified.
As 2004 draws to a close, we are now
uncharted waters

When a pug investment banker in the oil industry says the above on October 21, 2004, at a Harvard Business School symposium, I think it behooves the rest of us to consider the implications carefully.

2. The only chance we have is if the rest of the world tightens their
belts oil and pollution-wise to make up for our greed.

Boy, that'll go a long way to mending relations with them. :eyes:

4. Not gonna happen.
China and India want cars and air conditioners too. As they industrialize, they pump lots of carbon into the atmosphere.

I doubt they'll be willing to accept permanent third world status...

6. Yep. On the bright side, China is working hard on alternative
energy cars. But I fear that won't be enough of a help. *sigh*

3. Don't worry, the Rapture will save us!
Science. It's the new conspiracy theory. Ignored and taken as outlandish - because after all, it's never backed up that the Earth is only 6,000 years old or that humans magically and instantly appeared on Earth. Besides, who has time for stuff like that when you have such pressing issues like gay marriage on the table.

Welcome to The Divided Theocracy of America.

Bluntly - we're fucked. I don't know what else to say.
