somewhat.
I wholeheartedly agree that giving up is not the way to go, though I, too, am tempted to do so.
I've been walking around in a complete daze, trying to let it all sink in, thinking of how the election was yet again stolen from our grasp. I've also thought long and hard about going into ignorance mode for the next four years--you know, the old "ignorance is bliss" crap.
But then I check my email, see encouraging words from Michael Moore, Move On, the True Majority, Tom Paine, Truthout, Planned Parenthood, NRDC, Sierra Club, and most any other group with whom we have all worked in tandem over the course of the past four years. They might feel as bad as we do, but they've got the same agenda most of us have, regardless of this devastating loss, and if we give up now, we're only letting them win--and win completely.
Regardless of any other factors, we must hold them accountable. We must find ways to use the media creatively, and show the world the true corruption, and that is in the media. We must find ways to get around the new iron curtain that is being constructed even as we feel the melancholy of the reality which we see. We must show the world that clearly over half of the people in our country hate the son-of-a-bitch who will continue to fuck up our country, and that most of us will continue to have to apologize for our current government. We must also show the world that the narrow-minded, intolerant and completely ignorant people brought this man back to our doorstep, and that those who support him do so mostly out of their prejudices, their hatred of anyone different from them, and their small minds which refuse to accept the diversity our country has always had as its heritage.
We have a lot of work to do, even now--perhaps more work than ever. We are going to need to educate ourselves in ways that the right will never do, or even care to do. We are going to need to present facts to any smarmy, self-serving fool who tries to hold this election over us. We're going to need to memorize names, faces, facts, numbers and any and all elements possible to make another election nearly impossible to steal.
We're going to have to sacrifice some at first--things like printing our own versions of the extreme religious right's "tracts" and find ways to distribute them. We're going to have to put together fact sheets, and put them everywhere--never letting up on the information we are going to present to them. There are approx. 1460 days in front of us until the next election. However way our party wishes to proceed, we are going to need the majority of those days to formulate plans, to create 527s of our own, and we're going to have to get as much information on any one of the dozen people the right might try to nominate in 2008. Will one of our own past heroes be our nominee? Will we choose someone else? Those are elements which might have to wait, but the essence is this: forewarned is forearmed. And our greatest weapon is going to have to be the truth, because all others only put us on that same road to hell that they themselves have previously paved.
