I love gay people
What else can I say? I love gay people. I always have, and I always will. They're intelligent, strong-willed, thoughtful people who fight like hell every day just to be who they are. They face a million indignities every day that straight people can only guess at. They live with bigotry and intolerance at every step, and still they laugh, and love, and live their lives. I find so much to admire in that. I love gay people.

It's bad enough that our society barely tolerates gay people. But the one group that gay people can turn to for support seems to want to shove them back into the closet. As Dems, we need to learn the folly of taking anyone for granted. Will gay people vote for Republicans? Probably not in large numbers. But will they turn out to support a party that won't support them?

Would you?

1. I wouldn't be surprised if there is another party that will come out...
...if the persecution without protection continues. As Democrats we need to protect all groups that are attacked unjustly by the government and the electorate.

2. Absolutely. And all of us need to realize that today it's gay people...
...who will it be tomorrow?

Blacks?

Immigrants?

Atheists?

Kerry supporters?

YOU?

7. I agree totaly, but the gay community timing realy SUCKED!
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 09:16 AM by oc2002
The gays where used by Bushco, like Hitler stirred up Jewish hatred to establish his fascist state.

Thats the real story in this election, not 'protecting marrage' spin catch phrase. Its how this bigoted policy was packaged and delivered.

9. Not THEIR timing.
Excuse gays for not wanting their rights stamped out in front of them!

BTW, Hitler didn't "stir up" Jewish hatred. Hitler was ALL ABOUT hating Jews. That's what motivated him. He hated Jews before he made a single move toward fascism. Anti-semitism wasn't an excuse -- it was the driving force. That's what hatred can do.

Read "Hitler's Willing Executioners" -- shows how the anti-Semitism of Europe has long deep roots, and that the Third Reich was just the flowering of that.

11. No. It is not the gay community's fault
The religious reich have been gearing up for this since the late eighties with Measure 8 in Oregon. First they tried to change the constitution of the state of Oregon to declare gays and lesbians perverts and the prevent them from having public jobs, such as teachers and road crew workers and to prevent public libraries from having books by gays and lesbians or that were positive toward gays and lesbians. This was too draconian, so they decided to go after gay marriage on a county-by-county basis, and they had so much success with that, they went to Colorado for Amendment 2, which passed just barely but was overturned by the courts. They saw a clear path for victory and grabbed onto it with both hands.

14. There is never going to be a "good time" to try to erase bigotry from this
land. What if RFK and others like him had believed this when it came to civil rights and equality for blacks? We've let ourselves become complacent. Yes, let's just make another segment of our society of human beings be reduced to 3/5ths of a person because we don't think it's the right time to give them what they should already have as a basic human right.

8. people are people...
for some reason some people don't get that. I'm sure my neighbors here know I am gay...I certainly don't hide it. It didn't stop them from coming over for a bag of ice or batteries during the hurricanes! It didn't stop me from giving it to them...or to help my poor neighbor whose roof ended up in my yard. Exposure brings tolerance... it is a setback, not the end of the world. 4 more years of the monkey will bring a whole lot of people into the 21st century I think.
Me? I'm going to Disney World for my birthday!
Mach Spas!

10. As a straight Christian I know
that Jesus would would tell the "religious right" that they are sinfully wrong, and that their ignorance and hatred is a stumbling block that keeps them from obtaining the keys to the kingdom.

12. No Viet Cong ever called me N*****
(quoting Muhammed Ali as closely as I can remember)

In the same vein, no gay person has ever endangered me, lowered my standard of living, told me I was an immoral and bad person, etc.

The same can't be said of the people and party that own this country.

By the way, shame on all the would-be appeasers on this board who would sell part of our base down the river for their 30 pieces of silver.

15. Here's the lowdown...
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 10:20 AM by twenty2strings
People have images in their heads that are triggered by words or some graphic image...If you were to stand next to some couple making love in a bed it's just not gonna be a pretty sight. To the people doing it it's a very pretty thing, if you are lucky. These people get up out of their beds and perform the 99.9% of the other activities of daily living. The graphic movie clip played in the mind will always trump the truth of ordinary life...its funny.

16. If I had to guess I would say trolls are here trying to
split the party. Split if off so they can take election night off and get drunk instead of having to hack voting machines.

I so wish people would ignore it, I know we are smarter than they are.

20. Hear hear.
Do any of these "throw the gays to the wolves" appeasers really think that we'd get anywhere by doing it?

First thing, we'd lose the gay vote.
Next thing, the Republican candidate would just take a stance that's even more homophobic, and get the bigotry vote anyway.

You can't out-bigot a bigot. Furthermore, you shouldn't try.

I'd like to add: let's not sell out the women either. Abortion is the one issue on which the Democratic party has stood firm these last 25+ years. We are not going to improve our appeal by capitulating on that one. Again, the Repubs would only take an even more extreme anti-choice position (Let's prosecute abortion doctors for murder, let's ban contraception 'cos sperm cells and unfertilized eggs are babies too, yadda yadda) and continue to capture their constituency while we lose ours.

I mean, come on, guys. Does the fact that the other side got 51% of the vote really mean that we're wrong about all our core issues? Maybe the other side's got a point when it calls us wishy-washy.

And I'm straight as an arrow. My uncle is gay. I've had the HONOR of working and knowing many gays and lesbians in my day. At one time I could tell gay jokes with the best of them. It took me getting to know them personally to pull me out of that ignorance. I am very proud of my personal transformation. Its not about tolerance for me, it's about respecting them as human beings and honoring the daily struggle many have put up with on a daily because of the cruelty of their fellow man.

The 20% or so who voted for *. WTF is WRONG with them? That's like Jews voting for Hitler.
