20. Come to Vacationland!
MAINE! We have Acadia Nat'l Park and lots of other fun places to take a family on vacation.

BTW, men, if you go to old orchard beach, make sure you're book isn't upside down when your wife catches you looking at the bikini girls!

As for the boycott, a pizza place in Old orchard has it's counters covered with adoring pictures of *. Last summer I cancelled my order as soon as I saw them and told the owner exactly why I did it!

I WILL let you know ASAP, however!

BTW, There is a place on Rte. 1 in OOB called "Cascades". It's a restaurant/motel/campground that is very proud of it's rethuglican ties. Many prominent opictures of bush sr.

32. Even in the winter Maine is BEAUTIFUL!
Lived in MASS for more than 20 years (North Shore) and Maine is a must-see for anyone who hasn't been there. In the very snowy winter of 1995-1996 I was on the coast of Maine photographing lighthouses. Had to dig out three times, but it was well worth it!!

Peace!!

Blue businesses can be identified. Very easy to do. Similar to businesses being identified as "family friendly", etc., etc.

A really RED company, I believe I am the only one at my level who is even remotely liberal.

What is a guy like me to do? My company is partnered with Lowe's too, a not so liberal company as well.

19. No
I work for American Express. A colleague of mind just brought over a spreadsheet showing who the "big shots" contributed to.

Amex's CEO, Ken Chenault, gave bucks to Obama, Daschle and Erskine Bowles.

I have been with the company for a little over 30 years. Now I know why.

12. Long term and short term boycotts
Sorry for posting this in more than one place but I feel it is extremely important to keep talking about boycotts.

I really hope someone organizes a national, targeted, extensive boycott of companies that gets real attention.

I bet millions and millions of people would be willing to, say, not watch NBC for two months. Not go to WalMart for two months. I know that boycotting all of the above products indefinitely is great and I encourage it, but a recognized, quantifiable, targeted boycot would be scary for CEO's and their shareholders and would make a much stronger statement. I fear a diffused, undefined, soft boycott would not be effective. Sinclair worked because it was focused.

The WH and RNC need every one of us to be good consumers in this society. 55 million of us being bad consumers would get SERIOUS attention. If half the country could get on board by stating that NBC is tuned out for months due to their new role as propagandist for its militarist parent company, that would be a serious threat.

Witholding our money from corporations is now one of the few powers we have left. It is an untapped power. We don't have any branch of government. We don't have the media. We don't have the election process either, frighteningly enough. This is it, I believe. And it may be the most powerful tool out there if our side learns to use it well.

It is akin to taking the ball from the game and going home. No game.

14. What's with the 2 months?
I will happily boycott WalMart for the rest of my life, unless they change their policies. And so should everyone else, unless you live in a really isolated part of the country and have no choice where to shop.
They exploit labor, here and overseas, they censor free speech, they destroy communities and small businesses, and they'll sell guns and ammo, but refuse to sell the morning after pill. I think now some of their pharmacists even refuse to fill birth control prescriptions.
We should boycott them and oppose construction of new stores.

17. 2 months, 4 months, indefinitely.
There are some, like you probably, who can boycott forever. But since I want 10's of millions or more to participate and make a quantifiable statement I want to maximize feasibility and success.

A statement needs to be made not only to WalMart but to other vulnerable companies that supported Bush. The statement needs to be earthshaking. A statement that we may not have any legislative, judicial, executive, electorl, or media power but we do have an even more potent weapon.

I don't know what length of time millions of people from all over the world can hold a focused boycott...2 months seemed reasonable and 2 months would really screw up a quarterly report.

33. In the Charleston (SC) area
Our -8th- WalMart is being constructed right next to the new Sam's.

EIGHT WalMarts. FIVE of them Superstores. It would be 9 but the people in Mt. Pleasant told them to get lost. And the new 1/2 cent sales tax will be used to improve the roads in and out of these purveyors of pure evil.

Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 11:34 AM by aammpp
who is the owner? may I speak with them? who did you vote for? "bush" well, to your detriment, I can no longer support your business along with 48% of Americans, consider yourself notified.

Plain and Simple.

We are business owners. I noticed this morning that a nursing home we service had a B/C 04 sign out front. I am calling them this afternoon.
If the families of their residents call with questions, I will reply with same.

Plain and Simple.

15. ATTENTION EVERYBODY!
A group of us are working on this already! See the threads in each state forum entitled "Progressive PAges-- Need your input"!

DancingBear, Sapphocrat, and myself are in the formative stages of organizing a giant directory of companies to boycott and progressive companies to support in their place!

Wherever you are, give us your experiences! We need as much info as possible from family member, friends, acquaintances, whatever you have.

We have the biggies covered already many times over. Everyone knows about Costco being good, Wal-Mart being bad etc. We're including those. BUT we want to know about LOCAL companies that are supporting Repugs!

Give us what you got!

16. It can be done, but we have to be smart
We should start talking about which companies to boycott and maybe some criteria for red-listing companies. Everyone in the south isn't to blame. CNN is in Atlanta, but Faux is in New York. No boycott happening there, at least for me.

If we plan this out and do it wisely, it can be done, and it can work.

26. In order for this to be effective.....
I would suggest that we all agree and target ONE company for a period of say - six months. Do it loudly. Do it blatently. Do it in plain sight and tell that company the reason why their services are no longer welcome.

30. What about mini-boycotts?
Since for reasons of geography, limited market, or simple need (to buy gasoline, for example), not everyone can boycott for long periods.

Taking your idea of one company in a slightly different direction, why couldn't we target an industry or specific company for a day or a weekend? Say, two days of not buying gasoline. It wouldn't take away much revenue overall, because we'd still need the gasoline and buy it either before or after, but it would show what we can do.

And with goods and services that are less necessary than gasoline, we could have a pocketbook effect.
