Since I cannot start a thread (which I think is a good rule by the way), I have to hijack one -- at least briefly. I do want this thread to continue on, though, because the topic is so important. (Moderators can feel free to move this, of course.)

But I also had something I wanted to say to all of you. You know that I read DU and have for quite some time, long before any of you knew my name. I really appreciate the support you have given me on this latest hurdle and before. It means a lot to me and to John.

Now that I have more time, I will post some, too. But today I want to share something inspiring, part of a letter from Thomas Jefferson. This is from the new Bernstein biography of Jefferson. Jefferson sent the letter in 1798 after the passage of the Sedition Act:

"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt. If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."

I just wanted to say, as a cancer survivor myself, hang in there. I was young, 26 years old so it was difficult. I hope you don't find this presumptuous, but a little advice: don't be afraid to ask for help, don't always feel as though you have to strong for everyone else. I'm sure you'll be getting the best of health care. The nurses can be of tremendous help for alot of it. It's a scary diagnosis and there are days when it may seem overwhelming, but those days go by quickly.

I am a nurse in Pennsylvania YEAAAAAAAAAA we whooped in my state and the amount of people we had to volunteer was fantastic and our results showed as such, plus we little people in Pennsylvania are open minded. I volunteered at our rally and the crowd we had was unbelievable. THIS is Kerry/Edwards country in Allentown.

My prayers and thoughts are with you, thank goodness for modern medicine cancer survial is fantastic. My girlfriend was diagnosed last year with the ductal ca and she had chemo and radiation and one year later...HEALTHY and fine. I might add I was a bit jealous that her hair came in fully curled like she had a perm.

My hopes and thoughts for a complete, "forever" recovery.

I've had family experience with breast cancer and this cancer, like all cancers, is an affliction upon people that must be eliminated.

I hope that you and John can influence congress not only to pass legislation that requires a paper ballot but also robust, mandatory, manual auditing of elections. Other e-voting schemes and cryptography are only new recipes for disaster. No one considers the fact that new forms of technology also invite new and more egregious forms of fraud. The game of "beating and playing the system" is alway ahead of protecting the system.

It is time Congress quit listening to corporate and corporate-influenced election officials about voting. It is also time to invite more than computer scientists to testify. They are the mechanics who build the spec'd system. The system designers need to come from the voting activist community and accounting. Without that input, the status quo is likely to be maintained.

360. I second this -- AND have a couple more things to add

First, RedEagle and several other DUers have worked indefatigueably on BBV issues. I myself spent almost all of 2003 feverishly trying to make an impact on the issue. It is anything but tinfoil hat stuff. The Kerry/Edwards ticket did NOT lose this election -- it was stolen and the electronic voting machines (touchscreen AND optical scan) were a significant part of that theft, along with the normal vote suppression and other well-known types of vote fraud.

PLEASE, please, please help America one more time by making sure SOMEone in a position of power starts taking a good, long, hard look at this critical issue. Many DUers are as we speak pulling together various types of evidence and presenting it here. It thrills me that you read DU yourself, but in case you've been too busy with other things, you may not have a full appreciation for the incredible research that gets done here. Please try to find someone within your inner circle who can monitor this election business (and certain other topics) in the days ahead. Please also read this quote from Mark Crispin Miller -- I'm particularly thinking of his line about Kerry's response to the issue when Miller raised it with him some time ago:

I have to say that the Democrats' unwillingness to take this issue seriously, from the DNC on down with very few exceptions, is beyond our ability to comprehend, but it DOES make some of us begin to wonder exactly where some of their true loyalties lay.

Not hard to understand, really... Stress hormones have very negative effects on immunity and healthy. Thus, the very fact that you are focused on the future and on others, not only speaks volumes to your strength of character-- but it also tells me that all will be well for you. I am absolutely convinced. Certainly you have our thoughts and prayers with you as well. Treatment guided by the best science, but supported by faith, is a powerful combination, imo.

I'm heartened that our grief and sadness at Tuesday's events, has now turned to serious consideration of where to focus our efforts. Please stay involved to give your input and advice where you can. I know if you see an occasional critical comment from a DUer here (about the campaign or even about Senator Kerry or your husband), you will realize that it is emotion speaking and not reality. We are VERY appreciative of the hard fight you all undertook and we are proud of all of you. Please know that!

We have together incited a core of highly motivated activists. While I am in Colorado--a red state, for now-- I take heart in the fact that our State House has gone Democratic in both House and Senate, and we were able to send our Hispanic Democratic candidate, Salizar to the US Senate. As I write this, students in the Boulder High School are now protesting in a 24 hour plus sit-in, demanding to know of Republican standardbearers why their concerns over the draft, the war, the environment, and the devastating budget deficit have not been addressed. The youth are "getting it!"

He was my first pick for President and although he has decided not to run for a second term in the Senate (I wish he would reconsider -America needs him), it is my prayer that he will head the democratic presidential ticket in 2008. When my ten year old son came home from school Wednesday and asked who won, he cried when I gave him the news, saying "But this means we will be poor". And as for voter fraud, we are still piecing together the same stuff you are piecing together. I know that the two candidates had been assured that everything was in place -- and there was certainly a lot of visibility. I can't yet blame the people in the field who I believe were working hard to stop the election from being stolen. I don't think -- even in our frustration (and no one is more frustrated than we are) -- that we can say "the Democratic leaders did NOTHING to prevent the election being stolen."

I saw John and Teresa Kerry in Boca Raton two weeks ago, and your husband Monday night in Pompano Beach. Both rallies were inspirational. After working to ensure the people of District 26 in West Palm Beach were aware of the voting machine malfunctions, aware of their rights as voters,and helping them in any way I could, I was devasted when I woke up on Wed. to rumblings of Kerry conceding.

Was lucky enough to be on the rope line - about 10 feet from you. I got to shake John's hand. Seems like months ago now as so much as happened to the country and to you in just 7 days.

I'm sorry for the news we have heard concerning your health and many
are sending you healing...

I think you are a fantastic, intelligent, woman with a lot of good solid spine and you are certainly admired.

I was a volunteer usher at your husband's Boynton Beach, Fl speech and when the mob surged to shake his hand, they threw me off balance. I would have fallen had it not been Senator Edwards' wrist I was holding onto. :) and which gave me the support to get back up. Do tell him, I thank you.

Although Senator Edwards and/or Governor Dean were my first choices for President, like a good democrat I supported the party's choice and worked myself to exhaustion in the Delray HQ, as many other not so young democrats did, to carry Kerry to a win.

Kerry has severely disappointed me by not waiting eleven days for all the military and absentee ballots to be counted.

He promised to fight and had 10,000 lawyers, many who were here in Palm Beach County Florida, but he did not use them.


In Delray Beach, at Temple Sinai where three districts voted, we poll watchers were told at 6 PM in the evening that the electronic machines were not registering votes properly and to warn the voters going in to check their summary sheets to see that who they voted for were listed on the final electronic page. It would have been more helpful if we had been told this at 10 AM, not at 6 PM with one hour to go. by the fact that 99.6 percent of the people took the democratic
palm tickets in with them to vote, and that an inside poll watcher came out to tell me 800 people were standing in line with these dem cards in their hands, we know how the vote went.

Dem Party regulars ask us to continue to support a party which does not support us .

If Senator Kerry had not conceded in practically seconds, if Senator Kerry had kept his promise to fight and used the lawyers, the free volunteer lawyers, to show the rigging of the machines....(which many are working on showing here on DU, and have found computer code 18180 used to delete names, but which will get no publicity or action without a Kerry or an Edwards) there would be reason to hope that democracy would continue in America, that America would have a government by, for, and of the people.

Since Senator Kerry ran away and left his supporters twisting in the wind - we now have a totalitarian government, i.e. dictatorship without the checks and balances the founding documents intended.

There will not be another election to win. Democracy is dead in this country and November 3, 2004 is the day it died.

William Jefferson Clinton is the last truly democratically elected President of the United States and it is doubtful there will be another - for Senator Kerry did not fight to prove the machines without paper trails were rigged.

I won;t be working for the Democratic Party again because it doesn't work for me. To work for me it would have to stand up and fight to save this country from the destruction of the Constitution and the fascism that now engulfs it.

I also think Senator Kerry has signed the death warrant for the democratic party; this is implosion.

How disappointing.

In the future, I will sooner give my energy,time, money, and support
to any third or fourth or fifth people's party, then the democratic party. To tell us to join in making bushit's four years successful is
akin to in 1938 suggesting we join Hitler's Nazi party.

Forgive my anger, which is NOT addressed AT you who I deeply admire or
at your husband, for whom I had the highest hopes. But I do hope you will pass this on to Senator Kerry and whomever is managing the democratic party.

I have seen that there are few people who question whether or not this is really me. I puzzled how to "prove" myself. I don't think that anywhere it has been published that I went for one year -- my senior year in high school -- to Hammond High School in Alexandria, Virginia (now folded into TC Williams) -- but I did and graduated in 1967. The school was named for a Navy Corpsman who died (in Korea I think) and the mascot was an Admiral. Anyway, Digit, can confirm all this.

To "prove" that I have been a reader for a while, blm -- who posted a welcome here -- was a big Edwards' supporter in the primaries. And before the primaries, my husband's name was almost never mentioned on DU.

Another "proof"? DU checked with the campaign when I signed up to see if it was really me; they checked with me and I told them I had, and I think the campaign confirmed it to DU, but I never double-checked to see if that last step happened.

We're not ready to give up the fight. It's clear to me, from everything I've seen leading up to the election, that Kerry should have won this election. The exit polls strongly pointed to a Kerry win; so did the huge crowds of hopeful people who attended Kerry/Edwards rallies across the country.

Late in the evening on election night, John Edwards told us that he & Kerry would make sure that every vote counted. We heard it reported on cnn that the Red Sox owner offered his private plane to fly Kerry's lawyers to Ohio to oversee the vote count. We heard nothing more about the lawyers. Instead, Kerry conceded before the votes were counted. Having the campaign workers crunch the numbers to project the outcome is one thing; ensuring that votes weren't manipulated is another. I'm terribly disappointed that Kerry conceded without taking a longer look at any disparities. I'm concerned that in between the time we learned about Kerry's lawyers making plans to travel to Ohio & the next morning when Kerry conceded, that some back-door pressuring was going on between this crooked administration & Kerry. I'm wondering if he was threatened in some way.

I'm not ready to stop fighting. Four years is too long to wait for hope. Too much damage can be done to this country.

Please forgive me for using this opportunity as a soapbox. I wish you & John & your lovely family the very, very best.

Use every tool available to fight. Good medical care is the beginning, of course. The support of your family is important, and you have such a wonderful family! Being educated and informed about the disease and your own diagnostic info helps. I even used visualization of the cancer being clobbered in my body. They even say prayers of others can make a difference; even though I am not religious at all, I think there is some spiritual dimension in life that would account for this phenomena.

Thank you for letting us get to know you during the campaign. I admire you so much!

Hope you and John can come to Little Rock on November 18 for the opening of the Clinton Presidential Center. I'll be on the lookout for you.

You not only took any question going ,but you gave the MOST eloquent and reasoned answers to every question asked that I've ever heard from ANY candidate in any election in my lifetime.

The one that sticks out in my mind and will forever is the answer to the the "cost of frivolous lawsuits re medial insurance"..to my shame I'd heard some of the answer before but had forgotten it bUT for the first time inthis campaign I heard someone remind the public that Medical Insurance Cos . like all Insurnace Cos , take preiums today and invest them in the stock market to pay for payouts in the future...when the stockmarket went south in 2001-04 they had to raise premiums because returns from their investments in Stocks were small or even negative.

Anyway...enough said ..........WE LOVE YOU !

I was lucky enough to see your husband twice and Senator Kerry four times (It's nice to live in a swing state!). They were by far the best candidates and why Americans chose the other is so bewildering to me. The answer might just be that they DID chose the right ones but got cheated. I was working for the Kerry campaign in Cleveland, Ohio, phoning people from the Parma office. When it was decided that John and Elizabeth Edwards would do a town hall meeting in Parma on the same day as the vice presidential debate, I was offered the chance to work at the event . Although I desperately wanted to get inside and listen to the meeting, I worked visibility outside near the street.
I'll always remember how you acknowledged us with smiles and waves as the motorcade went by. It meant so much after 5 hours of standing outside waving and yelling and holding our signs high.
Later, I caught one of your town hall meetings on c-span. I was truly impressed with your manner of answering the questions. You are a fine spokeswoman for the Democratic party.
I'm with all the others here in thanking you for your efforts and wishing you the best with your health. My mother beat cancer this year, and I'm certain you will too. May God continue to bless you, John and the kids.

radical agenda to hand over the entire role of government to a few elites and multinational corporations is a silent coup. To date, yet to be exposed for the underlying radical and endangering agenda, ideology and the consequences if they succeed.

The propaganda machine, especially in the rural areas, strung together with church elders selling this radical agenda through claims of "moral values" and fear, newspapers that whitewash stories and publish little in-depth journalism and television spewing outright misinformation via the rantings of "anger cheerleaders" and "fear mongers" is programmed and controlled by this radical right.

This isn't the first time that some piped piper lead the populist to their doom with a hypnotic theme and I strongly suggest to the DNC
a public relations strategy based on past as well as incorporating the new communication tools of this era, to somehow cut through this wave of fear and lies to expose the truth.

Repeatedly I requested the campaign release detailed papers on plans, facts and information on the radical agenda in the rural areas. Rural people just do not have the web surfing skills of the cities, the ability to find information quickly on-line and so forth. The details need to be presented to the people, somehow, by talking with them, in person and using old fashioned paper documents that they can read. The DNC needs to talk to these people with the same will that the Jehovah witness's bang on the door in these areas.

It seems like the overall theme in information has been that truth can be colored and is somehow acceptable.

The truth shall set you free.

PS: To answer your post regarding OHIO - There is no way Ohio went Bush/Cheney...I was a poll monitor...the people lined in the pouring rain for hours weren't standing there waiting to vote their "Moral Values" for Bush/Cheney....from them to the people I stood side by side with at the rally in Cleveland on Monday night to the Bellman at the Hyatt who was voting for the first time ever, Ohio was/is Kerry/Edwards...now to just prove it.... :kick:

I never thought I'd be afraid to speak my mind in the United States of America. I never thought I'd be afraid of my own government. I never thought elections would be rigged. Those were things that happened in other, less civilized countries and I thought it could never happen here. I was wrong.

Thank you so much for posting. You've given me hope, which is something I haven't had for days. I've always believed, perhaps naively, that in the end, good always triumphs over evil. I’m not so sure of that anymore, but it’s comforting to know that you and your husband still believe it. Maybe there is hope for us after all. :)

Patience, meaning persistence, yes, absolutely.

But patience, meaning inaction, or weak action, or believing that a voting system that exclusively registers the will of Straussian fascists and Christian Dominionists will, without major changes, magically respond to my will four years from now -- no.

You see, GW Bush plans to kill me.

I won't live to see that glorious day in 2008 when unicorns dance and frogs become princes and the rigged mechanisms that do not work, work this time.

I'm disabled. I'm dependent upon public housing, Medicaid, and the SSI program (I fell one quarter short of qualifying for SSDI, courtesy of a bankrupt former employer who fled town with his employees' payroll and withholding taxes, or, perhaps, lack thereof). If any one of those programs disappear for me, I'm dead.

I haven't the money for market rate housing, and people who need to breathe through tubes half the day don't do particularly well sleeping in alleys (besides, it's kind of hard to fit a wheelchair inside a cardboard box).

SSI checks won't buy health insurance. Without medical care I can't get out of bed. Without the Medicaid waiver program, I have no aides who clean the house and cook the food and who keep me clean so that I don't get infected skin ulcers yet again. People covered with yellow pus filled staph blisters who have no medical care have a lifespan measured in hours.

And if your income is zero, you have no family, and you haven't a prayer of engaging in gainful employment, all of the above and more happens, and you're dead.

It is the explicit intent of the Republican Party to kill me. John Kerry's call for unity, to my ears, sounds exactly like a pledge among brothers to see me dead as expeditiously and harmoniously as possible.

So, no, I can't patiently do nothing. I can't patiently wait for a magical process whereby, in four years, everything is all better. Even if I believed in fairies and unicorns and the power of empire to make reality, by then I will be all utterly worse. Mine wouldn't even be a noble sacrifice. I'd be wastage. I'd be scrap on the floor, spit out by the machinery of politics in the course of manufacturing power for someone else.

It is my intent and my pledge to manufacture power for me, and for all the people I see, and for all the people I don't see, as expeditiously as possible, harmoniously if possible, with as much disharmony as is necessary. I intend to do this whether or not any of my leaders decide they'd like to lead a bit this evening after dinner. The least that can happen is I'll die a patriot, rather than wastage.

How appropriate it was that I became a precinct leader for your great cause and my precinct's polling place was for the first time in history...the Liberty Memorial.

You should be so proud that you brought out so many first time young voters. Many who took a bus and walked up the steep hill to the entrance to cast their vote. Many who's home is the Rescue Mission.

Going to the doc every few months for follow-ups is a drag, but it sure beats the alternative!

I supported your husband's bid to be the Democratic nominee. 'Had the sign in the front yard, pestered all of my friends to start paying attention to him. My two oldest kids were eager to go with me to John's rally in St. Paul last winter, where the crowd ended up being so large that we were only able to get into the press room to watch on a screen. His message of hope and idealism moved my children and was a wonderful way to start getting them involved in our political system.

My daughter, who has Juvenile Diabetes, wrote him a letter (attached to a four page list of organizations that support stem cell research), and we gave it to a staffer. We like to think it put a bug in the ear of the campaign about the importance of that issue.

I must say, though, that as I've gotten to know more about you, I think you would be my first choice as the Democratic candidate for 2008 ('sorry, John!).

the hopeful message. I think this spell will be on us a long time before it's broken. I truly believe part of that spell is christian fundamentalism. I have a friend say and have heard others say that a return to the "principles we have lost" will come through another cultural revolution like that of the 60s, yet different from the 60s, and the sons and daughters who were raised in religious fundamentalist homes will be, perhaps, on the vanguard of that revolution. As someone posted here who had grown up in that type of cultural environs said, fundamentalism is not life-giving and it's the nature of us to want life and freedom.

But I have to say, can we really wait this out? We are in dire circumstances here. When Mr. Bush became president in '00, I told my husband that this man (I will call him Dubya because he is neither distinguished nor a gentleman) scares the daylights out of me. I thought then, that he could possibly be the one to push the red button, and now that he has 4 more years to do so, it looks like it COULD become a reality. I hope you and John have a bomb shelter for your family. I wish I could afford to build one, but gee, my $300 tax relief check went to increased property taxes, inflated food and gas prices, and more than likely some of it into Dick's back pocket! I just want to say how sorry I am for our country that your husband isn't either the President or the VP (I was an Edwards supporter until he stepped down on 3/3, and so happy that he was on the ticket) or in the US Senate. I can't fathom why anyone wouldn't vote for what they aspire to become- He knows what hard work, real family values, love, and civil rights mean. He knows what is just and good.

I am just devastated to hear that you have breast cancer, and have been praying for you and your family during these tough times. I have been inspired to purchase pink (breast cancer research) items as of late...

and Please please please... He can still make such a difference. So many of us still support and dearly care for your husband- we NEED people like him! I know the repugs might have gotten him down, but PLEASE, WE LOVE YOU!!!!
