In my effort to find a book of collected accounts of womens experience with abortion pre-Roe v. Wade, I came across a bit of history I had completely forgotten about and how oddly it ties into what we are currently seeing in our country today.
The Comstock Laws (
http://womenshistory.about.com/library/ency/blwh_comstock.htm) criminalized birth control. Under the guise of 'morality' and the criminalization of 'dirty books' the Comstock Law also had the effect of criminalizing distribution of information regarding women's health issues (sounds eerily familiar to recent attempts to criminalize internet porn which happened to also limit information regarding breast and ovarian cancer).
So the core question is how long will it be before we have a new version of Comstock?
