What's really happening...
Did you know?

Dozens of kids in my own town of Santa Fe walked out of their high schools yesterday and marched to our state Capitol building. They left their classes against the sourest denunciations of their teachers and are willing to face sure and certain punishment. They marched in a quest to get answers to questions they weren't even sure how to ask. They are bewildered and unsure because they know that what has happened in this nation is a direct assault on their future lives. They want answers and accountability from the old people who did this to them.

Did you know?

Kids in some town in Colorado have barricaded themselves in their school library and are refusing to come out until they get ANSWERS to their questions. Sometime today, representatives of the state's Democratic leaders are going to talk to them.

Folks... we have lit a fire in this nation. These are OUR children. They listened to the things we said and they saw a chance for a better world. They WANT tolerance, intelligence and compassion to lead their lives. These kids have NO support from their communities. They are gonna get creamed for their simple acts of civil disobedience and they know it. But they don't care. They have discovered something within themselves that is more important than their own comfort. And WE gave that to them. Every hour, every day I am receiving information that more people under twenty years of age do not want a future based on ignorance, fear and hatred. We owe it to these kids to pull our heads out of our asses and wake up and smile and get down to the dirty business of taking care of each other and the planet we all live on.

After all the bickering, all the blame, it comes down to this.... We are still just as RIGHT as we were on November 1st, and they are still just as WRONG as they were. Any human who bows to the winds of error is not going to help any other human in this life. When you know you're right, when you understand in the very core of your being that truth is your friend, bitterness and acrimony leave you. Hope and strength can be seen by one glance into your eyes.

We have lit a fire. Let's take that fire down from the hilltops and into the valley. And let a New Year begin.......

7. Unfortunately...
the Santa Fe news item was produced by our local public radio station out of Albuquerque and they tend not to post transcripts on their website. You could maybe go to www.kunm.edu and make inquiries

The Colorado story was on NPR and you might be able to listen at www.npr.org

I will search and see what I can find.

I'll do a search and post whenever I find anything. I can't post personal messages here without permission but there's stuff accumulating on the web.

8. Now, I'm tearing up, again! Oh, please let this be the start of the young
stepping forward. As one who remain tremendously proud of those slightly older than I in the 60s--old enough to protest the Vietnam War, to bolster the Civil Rights efforts, to demand the Johnson "war on poverty," and to end nuclear proliferation--we desperately need an invigorated younger generation to come forward.

In my cynicism, I've always worried that many of our baby boomer parents may not have instilled the renegade revolutionary spirit in our children--so determined we were to protect them and to impart the spoils of success on them--cars, unlmited video games, travel, trendy clothes... I would happily admit to being wrong.

Please, my younger friends, prove me wrong. Those of us in our 30's, 40's, 50's and older will be there to aid you. But, we need your energy, your spirit, your fearlessness!
