The Guardian...."The Ayatollah: Iraq's Archduke?"
Edited on Mon Sep-01-03 06:09 PM by Rowdyboy
The killing of an Iraqi Shia leader could be the event that ignites the countries tensions and causes a reqional conflagration...

2. In an argument with some normally fairly rational people I
predicted that within 6 months the conflict in Iraq will have spilled over the borders and we'll be paying $3.00 and upwards for a gallon of gas as a result.

Note: they're normally fairly rational and overall don't like Bush but they still think invading Iraq was a good idea. They did eventually concede that it's looking more and more as though it's not going to end very well.

3. Why not.
Those of us, who have been on this earth longer than most, knew deep down in our psyches that the invasion of Iraq was a precursor to a possible WWIII.

4. I'm still totally amazed that the dimwits in washington didn't see this
coming! Our so called leaders don't have a basic understanding of the middle east? Quite evident don't you think?!

5. The game of "Risk". . .
that's all I could imagine as I read this article. Every country in the region is controlled by a potential or actual enemy and we're stuck in the middle, with only a few tenuous supply lines. My god, what did we do to deserve this insanity?

7. The article's beginning premise is so true...
The bombing was a HUGE event and yet it gets so little attention. And frankly I'm not buying the "he was our best friend" line the media seems so willing to disseminate.

8. Just like Archduke Ferdinand....
I believe it. And who would want this more than Israel? Maybe Osama.

9. Powell promised Hakim in Oct '02 that there would be no occupation?!
Has this been reported elsewhere? I know that Hakim nevertheless agreed to participate in the council, but this is shocking. I mean, the careless breaking of promises is shocking. Apparently, the US doesn't care to keep even the few allies within Iraq it was able to round up.

Also, tonight on BBC they reported that garbage is not being picked up, and hasn't been for months. In that heat? Disease, even epidemics could be the result (my surmise--the BBC just reported the fact). The electricity and water and now this news (oddly, not reported before--at least I hadn't seen it).

Thanks for posting this--I've read Whittaker before, and he knows a lot about the region. But I forgot to follow up--luckily he has an archive.
