I'm a little fed up with it. If Generation X actually was the right winged demons that you all make us out to be, you'd have a point, but we're not. I demand anybody who disagrees to prove otherwise.
I just read that thread about how Generation X is supposedly right winged. The truth is that I never saw so many younger people in my life vote this year than in any other year. That's because most of them wanted Kerry in. They didn't vote in that large quanity before. What? You think they got up early and waited in long lines to vote for a man who threatens to put them in a draft, raise their college tuition, keeps them jobless, etc? No.
I overheard something on TV actually bashing the younger people for not voting more in Ohio. Hello? Why would people bash the younger people for not voting if they thought we were a bunch of right winged jerks? A better question is why the baby boomer generation isn't condemning their own for voting for Bush. If they thought that younger voters were the answer, then they obviously also thought that too many in their own generation were conservatives.
Also, why did the Democratic party in my area come to universities to registers college students to vote, but the Republicans didn't? Answer: The Democratic party and the Republican party both knew what side most youth would be on.
You have no idea how many boomers I often hear condemning my generation for being too liberal; saying that they'll get more conservative the older and wiser they get.
People talk about how my generation (and the ones barely above and after)grew up with Reagan in the water. Which generation voted him in twice? It was the BOOMER GENERATION and the older ones. That's right. The morally superior boomer generation voted in one of the most psychotic presidents we ever had TWICE.
I've been reading up on the issues.
From what I understand, younger people are more likely to be pro-choice and for the feminist movement than boomers (even if they don't personally call themselves a feminist, they'll call it the women's rights movement and still support it).
Younger people are also more likely than boomers to have an inter-racial relationship.
We're probably more likely to be pro-gay rights since it's a much bigger issue today than it was before and since feminist groups are no longer shying away from the subject as they once were.
We're more likely than the boomer generation to support something other than a two party system. I hear far more younger people than older people opposing the system. On the down side, that does mean we're more likely to do something stupid like vote for Nader.
I personally think that we're more liberal than our boomer elders. Heck, even our Republican youth are more liberal than their elder Republicans. I know of a younger Republican that opposed the gay marriage amendment. I don't think the Republican party will be the same in thirty years now that a few of my generation are getting in there.
If you actually talk to younger conservatives (as opposed to just taking guesses about what they're like on here), you might find that about 99.9% of them are conservatives because their BOOMER parents are. In other words, they're repeating what they've been taught.
In other words, stop the finger pointing at youth. The accusations are UNFOUNDED. I would like to either demand an apology from boomers and Xers who finger point at the younger generation for being more conservative (with no proof that they are so) or PROVE to me that younger people really are the right winged demons that you make our generation out to be.
BTW, I will not stop this fight. I will continue to nag for proof of that accusation until it's either proven or not made as an accusation anymore.
The truth is that both boomers and Xers helped Bush win the election the other day. I do personally think it was more boomers. Most Xers may not identify themselves as liberal, but most of them also wouldn't care much for Bush. Keep in mind that they didn't get out to vote like this to get him voted in the first that. Also keep in mind how much of an increase in youth vote there was in the '90s because Democratic candidate Bill Clinton went after their vote. Most younger people lean democrat, period.
You boomers know this or you wouldn't be blaming us for not going out to vote more regarding why Democrats don't always win. In fact, you all would be wanting us to stay home. In other words YOU ALL KNOW BETTER THAN TO THINK THAT WE'RE A BUNCH OF RIGHT WINGED THUGS.
I personally think that instead of pointing the finger at any particular generation, that we should unite. We need to unite because this is a time of uniting. We need to get our heads together so we can defeat the conservative agenda. The truth is that when you point the finger at younger people, you get two responses.
1) Younger people who actually believe your message and become ashamed of their generation. THAT makes me angry because it's not true. We shouldn't have to be ashamed of our generation just because you all want to point the finger at a particular group. The truth is that when I got to the polls before they opened, the area was filled with younger people. I didn't see a boomer get in line until the line was already long. Of course, this was a university that I had to vote at. So many younger people voted this year and it warmed my heart in the same way that so many of them showing up that the pro-choice march did. The state that I live in NC is normally easily given to the Republican candidate. The Republican normally kicks the Democrat's butt like crazy. This year, Kerry came pretty darn close to beating Bush. I think it closer than before.
and
2) Younger people who don't believe you, think you all just want to isolate them, and start doing progressive activities elsewhere.
It's not cool Really.
