Adams and Jefferson were great friends, albeit estranged for a dozen years after Jefferson defeated Adams for re-election. They were extremely close, their correspondence was warm and lasted for decades, and Adams' last words were "Thomas Jefferson survives," although Jefferson had died a few hours earlier than Adams.

I refer you to David McCullough's excellent biography of John Adams; he and Jefferson were great men and great friends; their differences were political.
