Florida: My discussion with a self-described "Redneck Democrat"
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 08:44 PM by soundgarden1
I just got a taxi ride from an amazing sombitch in Orlando. He told me that when the chimperor "won" in 2000 his Korean-war-vet-dad moved to Scotland because he "couldn't take it". He said his dad was a "Redneck democrat". This driver was fuckin awesome, perhaps too awesome for the Bluestate taxi passengers to appreciate. SOuthern accent - the whole 9? I thought to myself, wtf is going on here?

Ill start from the beginning. I get in the Taxi (after 4 Yuenglings - Thank You BlueState NorthEastern Brewery for the Yuenglings btw) and I ask the driver how he's doin. He said, "Bo Sox won, wtf can I say - I'm doing great - but then the election. . . " then trailed off. I pressed him and replied "My dad is the biggest StLouis fan in the world, so I was torn between my childhood team and a team under a 90 year curse that I hope is overcome".

He (the taxi driver) tells me that in '67 he was a 9 year old in the dugout of the BoSox when they would spring train. (As you Northerners often forget, all the teams have an equivalent town in Florida where they practice in the Spring). Anyway my taxi driver was in the dugout as a 9year old, and apparently around the time was when the Cards last met the BoSox in the Series (Im not too aware of Baseball history, Im recounting this fromt he conversation).

I, taking his previous hint, change the subject "Yeah I'm still reeling from the election." Keep in mind this is in fucking Florida, this is a conversation best not initiated unless youre a gambling man which I am not. He had left some clues earlier, though, that I found irresistable to pursue.

He replied straightaway "Iraq reminds me of Vietnam" and I didn't push his experience with that debacle, I could tell he had been there though. Often you can just tell.

He said "What the fuck is a compassionate conservative? Starve you to death then pay for your burial?"

This guy got got tipped 50% for that line alone. It went on from there, but Ill spare you.

2. I've had cabbies lose tips with an ill-considered Hill/Bill "joke"
always from a white guy. The immigrant drivers have a far different perspective.

great line about compassionate conservatism
