Friends of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender DUers...
I, Dawn, will always find for your rights. I accepted Kerry's position advocating civil unions, because I felt getting * out of office was a priority. We, out here in SoCal, are very proud of our domestic partnership law. It's a start. I will never accept a platform that does not mandate equal rights and benefits.

LGBT issues/positions certainly did not lose us the election. My theory is that I live in a country largely inhabited by uneducated dufuses. That cost me the election.

I am committed to fighting for fundamental rights, such as the right to marry for all, and am considering joining the Human Rights Campaign. That Cheryl Jacques is an effective lobbyist, or seems to be (very articulate).

Is that the suggested org to join to show my support (this ol' mom wants to do her part).

Dawn

1. Thanks LSMom
I'm well aware that almost everybody here supports the struggle, and the few who question it don't do so out of malice, but out of a pragmatic desire to win. Well, then there were a few bigots.

I appreciate your post.

7. I really
haven't seen a huge number of people coming out against our fight. Honestly I haven't. Maybe I'm being more charitable than usual, but I'm heartened by the overwhelming support we've been getting.

5. Thank you!
I just want to mention, I know Cheryl personally, and she is very, very articulate. She is right on message, every time. She is former state Sen from MA and she has got messaging down pat! Good person, too, with a lovely wife and two adorable children.

8. Thank you so much LSM
I too accepted Kerry's position advocating civil unions, because I felt getting * out of office was a priority, and I don't care what you call it as long as there are equal benefits. Why many countries in the civilized world now has gay marriage (marriage!) and we feel we have to go backwards is beyond me. I appreciate your post very much.

11. Organizations
LSMom, et al.

Human Rights Campaign (HRC.org), National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (ngltf.org), People for the American Way (PFAW.org) as well as the ACLU (aclu.org) ALL fight for the rights of GLBT people.

HRC is focused on the push for equality through education, and political involvement.

NGTLF and ACLU take on specific cases and advocate for those whose rights have been infringed.

PFAW is a broader organization which has come to the aid of the GLBT as well.

Anyone, if I have missed any--or mischaracterized these, please chime in.

12. State and local orgs are also a good place to start
They usually have less funding but do work that has more immediate results in local communities.

Another National Org is the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE).

14. Thanks, DUers!
I'm already a member of PFAW. I like it a bit better than the ACLU, although I might have to go begging to the ACLU if they arrest me one day.

I'm going to join HRC...

although NGTLF seems like a good choice too.

I just wish that all the DUers that are supportive of your rights would so indicate.

PFLAG supports family and friends - gets them on the right track - right?

13. It makes me sad to think how much crap people have to put up with just
trying to be themselves.

15. My hubby never understands (and neither do I) how a person..
could be more worried about two loving people as a couple than killing over 100,000 innocent civilians.

This retired social worker kind of wonders if weak-minded people just don't have a perpetual need to feel superior to somebody, since they feel so powerless themselves.

16. I stand with you Dawn
You guys, I am so sorry for how this all went down based on how these morons feel about how you live your private life. I have been crying because we lost but I have been crying just as hard because so many people came out to vote to take away rights you didn't have to begin with. I can't even imagine how you must feel. You are all in my prayers and thoughts and hopefully someday we can pass amendments that require everyone to be gay- It must be pretty easy to switch according to their philosphy. Not all breeders want to impose our lifestyle on you. Please remember that when you are in despair.
