3. Maher asked him what the blue states "don't get"... |
|
It started with Simpson accusing Maher of gay-bashing and it swiftly went downhill when Maher said "Well, give my apologies to the two gay people in Wyoming"...Simpson started shaking his finger and spitting out "Bullshit!" Simpson said as long as we keep "making fun of people" and "Hollywood thinks they're smarter than everyone else" we'll never get it. Simpson finally "pulled the plug" on the interview (it was on the big screen). How's that?

|
Mentioned his work with the republican unity something-or-other, a group of gay repukes, and he said they were "very active", to which Maher replied "Oh, I'll bet they are" and off Simpson went.

Democrats are out of touch with the heartland. Talk down to middle America, make fun of religion... Fucking sickening. Since when is the South and the midwest "real America"? I thought the first thirteen colonies were on the east coast. I better stop. I might break my computer. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

He told Maher since he always condemns the zealots on the right, Maher should condemn Chomsky and Michael Moore. Maher said "There's a difference between disagreeing and condemning!" I don't believe that this "unity" thing will ever work. :eyes:

13. Alan Simpson - Lover of Saddam Hussein |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 11:44 PM by HootieMcBoob
Saddam Hussein's Republican press agent
During a visit to Iraq in April 1990 (four months before the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait), Republican Senator from Wyoming Alan Simpson told Hussein:
"I believe that your problems lie with the Western media, and not with the U.S. government. As long as you are isolated from the media, the press and it is a haughty and pampered press -- they all consider themselves political geniuses. That is, the journalists do. They are very cynical. What I advise is that you invite them to come and see for themselves."
Simpson later disputed the overall accuracy of the text, saying Hussein "manipulated and abridged" the transcript. However, the Wyoming legislator conceded that his comments about the press were quoted correctly.
Simpson's statement looks even worse when you consider that in the previous month Saddam had executed an Iraq-born reporter on trumped-up charges of espionage. Farzad Bazoft, who worked for the leftish British newspaper The Observer, had been investigating Saddam's weapons-development programs.
During the Iraq war itself, however, Simpson was among the loudest to condemn that press for "supporting Saddam". Simpson was no longer buddying up to Saddam, but he kept his hatred of the press intact:
"Peter Arnett, the Madman of Baghdad, has been taking direct B-52 carpet-bombing hits the past month from Congressmen, "media watchdog" groups, and assorted froth-mouth loonies from rural Indiana over just exactly how much "propaganda" he spewed out for Saddam Hussein. Senator Alan Simpson of Wyoming even said that Arnett was acting as an Iraqi 'sympathizer.'"http://www.johnjemerson.com/zizka.idiots.htm

17. I have a story about Senator Simpson |
|
from back when he was still in office. I was working for the railroad at the time and when we tore up the UP yards in Denver so the city could put Coors Field in, several tractor trailor loads of those RR ties ended up, gratis, on Sen. Simpson's Wyoming ranch. Just the labor costs alone had to be several thousand dollars.
Pretty blatently illegal - but, hey - the office has it's privilages, I suppose.

36. The Union Pacific RR has a lot of power |
|
in Wyoming (where the division headquarters are, and Colorado is in the Wyoming division), and in Nebraska (where the company headquarters are). It was always easier to circumvent state and federal law in those places than it was in Colorado - I'm sure with a little help from friendly lawmakers. One hand washes the other, after all - and what's a few thousand dollars in railroad ties compared to ignoring EPA regulations at a derailment site? It's a lot cheaper to just bulldoze that toxic waste under the ground than it is to dispose of it properly. I'm sure the word came down from the top - Mr. Simpson needed some fence ties for his new spread - and Denver was the closest place they were available.

25. I think a lot of repubs like Simpson probably hate the idea that "moral" |
|
issues won it for Bush. That's why we should push it and push it hard. It will expose the rift that they have in their own party. The CBS story may be right about it being a false issue (I don't think it is), but so what. We should bring it up whenever we can. I have already, and I make sure to use the word homophobia and to express my feeling that it was hatred and fear that won it for Bush. Maybe the fruitcake from Oklahoma and the brain dead guy from Kentucky represent the extremist right-wing, but a lot of the repubs must hate being associated with the fundies.
I haven't seen the show yet (I'm on the W. Coast), but I know Simpson is thin-skinned. I also think he would not like being viewed as being connected with religious extremism. But it's their baby now. It's the monster they created, and all the repubs should should be forced to face that ugly fact.

Which dovetailed nicely with what he was trying to say: when we ridicule, we can't expect to persuade anybody or get people to like us. He's got a point. Now if he could just convince Rush Limbaugh of that, we'd have a better country.

Then you mention Rush? I'm gussing you are being sarcastic?
For many long years the right has made fun of Femanazis, Hollywood "types" liberals and gays. And NOW the sanctimonious assholes are pissed that we make fun of them?
Get real. Maybe it's time for us to act a bit like Rush and call a party of greed and hate just what it is.
It worked for Rush and the like. Shine a light on these worms and they scurry under a rock screaming "you are nothing but Bush haters."
The double standard from the party that made an enterprise out of hating clinton is mind boggling.
So....the show hasn't aired here yet. Will it make me mad at Maher? Is Bill blaming the gays or the gay bashers?

Edited on Sat Nov-06-04 02:14 AM by NRK
Rush deserves our scorn, but half the country doesn't. We need to be persuading these people of the rightness of our views, not putting them down. Rush's tactics haven't persuaded many of us to his side. He preaches to the choir, for the most part. Likewise, our ridicule of the other side doesn't win many converts, but it does make us feel better.
You're right about the "Bush hater" canard. A lot of them hate us too. Even so, pointing that out won't win them over. The goal is to get some of them to agree with us. Calling them greedy and hateful, while true, won't work.
That said, Simpson misunderstood the context of the discussion and was off base to criticize a comedian for making jokes.
The show did not go well, but D.L. Hughley makes it worth it. Bill is good, too, despite the ugliness.

Payback time for making liberal a dirty word. call every GOP-er you know, I don't care if he's atheist - "evangelist". be "nice" - "Congratulations - you evangelists won" - then watch the squirming. It was fun when Sullivan talked about "pushing the wingnuts against the wall" 2 days after they hijacked an election (with rigging). They are sore winners - let's make it very sore for them.

acted like a total brownshirt. Maher asked him what Democrats needed to do or something to that effect and Simpson wnet nuts, bullying him, invoking Matthew Shepherd and telling Maher that if we kept making fun of "them" we'd keep losing elections. The conservative guy on the panel (can't remember his name) kept it up throughout the show. Is this what we're to expect now? they've taken their lead from the president and apparently it's the one question rule. Also, Susan Sarandon was on and he asked her what the main reason was for us losing and she said VOTER FRAUD. He said "Oh, come on..." and she told him no, you'd better look at all the other stations because they are starting to report widespread voter fraud. She wouldn't let up on him either and mentioned Black Box Voting. Someone need to get the Black Box Voting info into Maher's hands, pronto.
