Look out for Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of NH |
|
Gregg just won overwhelming reelection. But he now represents the only red-to-blue state in the nation. It's also the only state that deposed a sitting GOP governor. Sure, it's another six years till he faces voters again, but he needs to be looking over his shoulder at the way his state now appears to think.
In today's climate, Gregg is a moderate. He has, for example, backed fiscal responsibility in working on the budget. He will again be heading the Budget Committee. He has looked for sane changes to Social Security -- not by privatizing but by, among other responsible proposals, raising the retirement age, which is entirely appropriate at least for those whose jobs do not require intense physical labor. On education, he bargained with Ted Kennedy on a host of issues early on in the Bush administration.
It will be interesting to note whether Gregg buckles to the Taliban wing of the party or sets out a course that can be supported by the Democrats as well as the other northeastern Republicans and Lugar, Hagel and McCain.

I was hoping too. Ah, well. I'm glad we Mass-holes are making a dent in NH politics. The red parts down here in so. NH are slowly fading to pink as the grumpy old Repukes are replaced with young professional "Mass-holes" as they so fondly refer to us. Good riddance!
