My letter Brooks today.
Brooks writes:

"If you want to understand why Democrats keep losing elections, just listen to some coastal and university town liberals talk about how conformist and intolerant people in Red America are. It makes you wonder: why is it that people who are completely closed-minded talk endlessly about how open-minded they are?"

Who are you, de Tocqueville? Margaret Mead? Congratulations on your foray into the uncharted Red Zone, where evidently you found the natives much more complicated than the elites would have us believe.

I've been there too, probably a lot more than you, and as a musician in a much better position to observe the locals in their naturally inebriated state. Perfectly nice people, if you don't count the latent racism, religious delusions and homophobia, but otherwise the salt of the Earth. Great if you need your car fixed, and usually quick with a referral to a good local prostitute. But politics? I am sure you are aware that by a wide margin, Bush supporters believe things which are objectively untrue -- this election was about the triumph of superstition and cognitive dissonance.

But don't take my word for it ....if you want to know why Republicans keep winning elections, read H.L. Mencken. With a feast before them, they turn their backs and eat flies.

As to your point that Americans broadly voted for Bush, not so fast.
Pat Bushanan points out that both Nixon and Reagan took 49 states -- Bush got one blue state narrowly (Iowa) and lost New Hampshire. Some broad mandate.

By the way, Democrats don't "keep losing elections."
They now control slightly over 1/2 of legislatures, including the ones in the important states, and they just elected a Democrat governor of
Montana and Senator from Colorado.

1. David Brooks: self-hating closet gay?
Maybe my gaydar needs recalibration, but he sets it off in a big way.

Why can't he write a new column instead of always publishing the same one?
