OK, so what is OUR AGENDA for this country?
People have said that is a big part of why the Right wins. They have an
agenda and pursue it all out. I agree that we need one of our own if
we are to defeat them, and it has to be VERY different from theirs.

Here's my start. Please add yours!

Agressive development of alternative energy sources.

A coalition of all major religions in this country commited to tolerance an
separation of church and state.

The development of new forms of birth control, and a commitment to sex
education to counter the need for abortion.

A commitment to restoring the public school system nation-wide.

A commitment to those who have invented new comsumer products, to be
manufactured in the US.

A commitment to uphold the right of all citizens to enter legal contractual
relationships regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.

Commitment to the environment.

1. A commitment to restoring public discourse
instead of showing "both sides" - the spin and deception from both sides.

2. Thanks. I forgot that...
We need a functional FCC who will punish those who perpetuate lies over
the national media, and a true balance of views.

6. Energy sources
If America does so, before anybody else, we will be able to export that source to the rest of the world, creating jobs here while solving many pollution problems and enabling more money to go into other needs.

Energy is number 1.

13. Yes, of course
I was thinking long term. But right now, today, we are working on elections and we'd better get it fixed.

Paper ballots, counted by human beings. Three times.

as a new Civil Rights Movement, with a charismatic leader like Dr. Martin Luther King, and others like Rosa Parks and Medgar Evers and all of those who heard the call of conscience. They resisted. They did not give up. They changed America for the good.

Unfortunately, the discriminators have come forward once again and are in power, using fear and loathing as their unspoken goal, and have stolen our rights away.

I do not wish to take anything away from Kerry and Edwards. (This election was stolen by *co, once again.) Rhetoric works well when it appeals to the emotions, and it was difficult to cast any of the criminality of *co in emotional terms, just rational ones. We got the message, but those who like to be told what to think, did not. The words didn't work.

Where are our leaders?

9. Difficult to cast Bushco's criminality in emotional terms...excellent.
I was trying to articulate that point all campaign long.

The problem is many people cast their vote irrationally. This is a seemingly
unchangeable obstacle in our path. And of course the Christian Totalitarians
cash in on that aspect of elections.

I don't know if we need a new Civil Rights movement. We need some
innovative way to address bigotry, but I don't know what it is. "Diversity"
and "multiculturalism" were attempts to put a new face on how we
integrate out society, but they seem to have totally freaked out a lot of
red-state types, who have responded by playing the victim and claiming
their cultural heritage (read: white) is being destroyed.

10. Don't forget the poor/disabled!
Commitment to integrity of the voting process is vital, of course.

But also...making the application process for disability faster and fairer, without having to appear in court like a common criminal to "prove" you can't work.

Making welfare and its job training available to single able-bodied people, not just people with dependent children, to help them on the road to self-sufficiency again.

Encouraging single mothers NOT to get pregnant again and again to increase their welfare payments, by encouraging birth control and penalizing women who repeatedly get pregnant just to abuse the system. You can make a mistake once, maybe twice, and help should be available for them--no argument there. But these women dragging 4 and 5 preschool-aged kids with different fathers into the DES office is ridiculous. Especially when single people at risk of homelessness are turned away...only single people currently applying for SSI disability can get welfare, and only for 12-18 months. This is unfair, and penalizes people (like me) who are responsible enough NOT to bring another life into this world unless/until I can afford it.

Not trying to sound like a Freeper here, just wanting the system to be fair and help ALL people in need. :)

12. I'm afraid that it will take as much energy to correct the voting system
as all the energy combined to fight racism, poverty and everything else combined. Don't underestimate how hard this will be to get integrity in voting. It needs 100% commitment, period, before we can move forward again. We can demonstrate all we want, but until we have legitimatley gained power through a democratic process and we have real RESOURCES at our disposal, NONE OF THIS OTHER STUFF WILL MEAN ANYTHING.

15. My thoughts on our agenda
Edited on Sat Nov-06-04 03:15 PM by quiet.american
Maximum on the minimum wage

An end to welfare for the wealthy

Keeping American jobs in America

An end to old men telling young women what they can and cannot do with their own bodies

Supporting tolerance, not approving bigotry

Putting the "free" back into "land of the free"

Standing up for nature, not stomping it down
