Hi, remember me? I'm a bleeding heart liberal.
It's been a long time since you heard from me. At least 20 years in round numbers.

Do you remember how I cared for others selflessly? Perhaps you do. You see, I thought society was a place where we should try to see how much we can care, and yes give to others in need. I believed the greater good was served by giving, not selfish greed.

And you know what? Those few greedy people in the world loved to call me a bleeding heart liberal. They said I'd just "tax and spend". And the more they said that about me, and called my heart bleeding, the more I was elected. It is because most people want to live in a world where giving to the needy and caring for the welfare of others, regardless they are christian, muslim, catholic, atheist, agnostic, or buddhist is valued. Most people do want to get along in a peaceful world.

But something changed. Somehow, through no fault of my own, I seem to have lost my way. Even though I still care about others, the more I care, the more I've become "elite", and seem to have lost my morality according to the greedy people. I spend my time fighting my image of morality instead of letting my heart bleed.

And now, some say I should get tough with others. Tough love, so it's called. I think I can't do that because, well, I care about other people. And when I dig a little bit, I find that most people care about me. Perhaps I need to show them my heart still bleeds for them. Perhaps from that we can find the common ground and common sense will free us from the bonds of hate, terror and isolation where the radicals rule. Perhaps then the greedy people will lose their power.

3. You're welcome. The idea for this came to me today.
Partly inspirational, partly realizing the label "bleeding heart liberal" served us very well.

"I spend my time fighting my image of morality instead of letting my heart bleed."

Please tell me this isn't sarcasm, I read it straight.

One thing I'm amazed at is that the right is still SEETHING with anger about the sixties, I mean they are still as mad now as they were then.

They are still mad at Jane Fonda, they are still scared shitless of women, they are still mad at the "draft dodgers" peaceniks, hippies and all the other "commie-pinko faggots". The men that blew away Peter Fonda at the end of Easy Rider are running the country now, and in their world view, NOTHING has changed. I mean all that war and turmoil and bloodshed and peace and love and music in the sixties never even HAPPENED in their view, it was just a blip on screen to them...here the whole world thinks it is moving forward toward peace, and them are trying to wrest it back into bigot's heaven with both arms. Amazing.

But like the Bill Cosby joke about fear of seeing the doctor, you have the cancer whether it's diagnosed or not, even though we fool ourselves to think we have don't have it if we don't KNOW we have it. The pain we are in as a nation is not the having of it, it's the KNOWING bout the having.

edit: I love the bumper sticker that says "if ever there was a bleeding heart liberal it was Jesus Christ".

5. No, no sarcasm at all.
That's what struck me. The more they called us bleeding hearts, the more regular people realized that the dems were on their side.

6. there was a democratic "challenger" at my polling place and
because there were no repub challengers there, she just stayed all day and helped people voting. Just the fact that the repub challengers were out trying to keep people voting vs. what the democrat did says so much.
