Is there any state where the gay marriage bans wouldn't pass?
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 05:40 AM by fujiyama
I'm curious, but what about the northeast? Would these bans pass in Vermont and Massachusetts?

I know Dean got elected after signing the civil unions bill and I heard that many MA state legislators were reelected after supporting the ruling...

I'm kind of curious. After all it passed even in Oregon...Granted, OR has some very conservative parts of the state.

I know that we talk about the blue/red state divide, but many so called blue states also voted in favor. It's disturbing how potent a political force homophobia is in this country.

Also I'm curious. How many states have had these amendment proposals on their ballots? Anyone have a list? I know 11 passed on Nov 2....and I know most of the states. I also know one passed earlier in the year in MO.

5. i thought it was worded oddly
to not specifically exclude gay marriages? the one in california is similar, there's debate over whether or not it actually bans gay marriages (which is why san francisco was issuing them earlier this year.)

2. As you know gay marriage is in Massachusetts
Governor Romney is spending his term fighting it tooth and nail. A motion passed in the legislature this year after a bitter battle. To suceed, the motion must pass again next year and then go out for vote. Democrats, however, won MORE seats in Mass. this year and an article reveals that NO legislator who voted to uphold gay marriage was defeated on Tuesday. See:

4. California passed it a few years ago
it said something like marriage will be defined as between a man and a woman. but i wonder what the numbers would be if it had said instead that it would ban gays from marrying.

most people in california do oppose a federal amendment to ban same sex marriage.

6. No a ban wouldn't pass in Vemont
Vermonters are so over the whole divisive gay stuff. It's a non-issue here.

8. not sure about us graniteheads-
we have "live free or die" as our state motto-
don't require helmets on motorcyclists
don't require seatbelts on adults
don't have a state sales or income tax (rooms and meals only)
and got rid of our Repub- Joke Benson for Gov.
We don't follow the 'mainstream' on most anything-
even though we've been stubborn fools a lot of the time-

We have 'state run' liquor stores, (on interstate lay-by's) which partially fund our education, along with our state lottery-

Do not require car insurance unless you've been DWI or in an accident that you were at fault for-
We might just be 'outthere' enough to live, and let live-
i'd like to hope our stubborn independence would carry over through where it really counts-

Suprisingly liberal despite having a very solid Republican base; however I think a gay marriage ban would (unfortunantly) pass.
