Ivins: Shrub a Chicken-killing Dog, Real Clear Who Made the Mess

AUSTIN, Texas -- Do you know how to cure a chicken-killin' dog? Now, you know you cannot keep a dog that kills chickens, no matter how fine a dog it is otherwise.

Some people think you cannot break a dog that has got in the habit of killin' chickens, but my friend John Henry always claimed you could. He said the way to do it is to take one of the chickens the dog has killed and wire the thing around the dog's neck, good and strong. And leave it there until that dead chicken stinks so bad that no other dog or person will even go near that poor beast. Thing'll smell so bad the dog won't be able to stand himself. You leave it on there until the last little bit of flesh rots and falls off, and that dog won't kill chickens again.

The Bush administration is going to be wired around the neck of the American people for four more years, long enough for the stench to sicken everybody. It should cure the country of electing Republicans.

And at least Democrats won't have to clean up after him until it is real clear to everyone who made the mess.

In some circles, that will be seen as sour grapes. But in Texas, we've been losing elections to the demagogic triad of God, gays and guns long enough to be pretty cynical about how it works out. I'm sure millions of Americans voted for George W. under the honest impression that he stands for moral values -- family, patriotism, faith in God. I'm sure it's the Democrats' fault that such a silly ruse is allowed to stand. What Bush actually does stand for is nicely summed up by a rather common news story that got stuck on the business pages lately. ....

4. I agree, but
none of this matters if we don't fix the voting system which has been completely corrupted by the RePUKElicans. Two elections stolen by Rove Incorporated, and I wonder who will be running the next republican presidential campaign? Man, that sure is a perplexing question!

3. Amen Molly!
Preach girl, preach. Maybe eventually some of this stuff will sink in with the brighter among the * lovers, but I kind of doubt it. I think that they've all turned off that portion of their brain that's supposed to be devoted to sanity and reason--that is, if they even have brains. Tuesday would seem to indicate that they don't.

5. I saw a woman (47, red state) in a Times article last night...
She was saying how Bush is so honest because when he makes a mistake, he owns up to it.

Don't laugh.

That's simply the result of proper myth creation. Now you know why Bush never admits that a mistake exists - calling attention to that mistake simply looks like Democrats lying their asses off to the ignorant since, if it really was a mistake, Bush would own up to it.

7. I've heard so many brainwashed * lovers, it's sickening
I saw them interview a 60ish man that sid he voted for * because of his morals and honesty and I just about puked. He also said that Christians make better decisions than non-Christians!! I've always felt that being a true 'believer' in God or a true 'believer' in atheism was illogical - making a decision with no facts to back it up - which is why I've been an agnostic since I was about 13. I prefer not to live in a fantasy world and base my decisions on passages in what very well could be just a poorly written novel. Who's going to make the better decisions??

13. My brainwashed friend says:
1) Bush is the most pro-science president ever
2) Bush is not religious -- it's just crazy blacks in the north who are religiously insane (my friend is kinda pagan). He insists that fundies are not Bush supporters -- that crazy religious people vote for Kerry, who was, in my friends words, always going to church.
3) Bush does not support Israel -- only Democrats do

This same friend is in the middle of a dilemma -- his mom had a massive stroke. His brother and he decided she should be allowed to die -- as had been her wish in life should the situation present itself. But his crazy fundamentalist daughter demanded that she be put on life support, and if they did not agree, was going to bring her whole congregation and a team of lawyers in to stop her from being "murdered." The fundie visits her and preaches to her, thinking that on some level, she is getting through to her and saving her soul. Meanwhile, the old woman, in life, was not religious. For ME to be incapacitated by a stroke, and to have some wacko exhorting me to accept Jesus Christ into my life as my personal savior, while I lay there helpless but had to listen to some wacko carrying on like this -- truly, it would be hell for me.

I wanted to be discreet, and kinda sorta brought up the Terri Schiavo case (he lives in FL too) -- but he claimed that Jeb Bush had NOTHING to do with these wackos.

Only goes to show -- the authoritarian mindset is independent of logic and facts and consistency. People USED to love to say stuff like "NEVER AGAIN!" but oops, here we go again -- fascism has been allowed to overtake democracy.

6. I just hope Rove doesn't scheme another "message" for the brain deads
A message that rationalizes the rotten chicken as a symbolic of liberal moral values and that we must be fumigated.

9. Bo44 has it right. The Liberals/Democrats/Socialists/Leftists/
Progressives/Nonchristians will be demonized (yes, more so). They'll have a slogan like "Reject Liberalism or Die" to lump all these so-called appeasers and girly economic people into one hate basket. All blame will be placed there -- this legacy liberalism, as they may call it, will be blamed for the wars, the economy, terrorists no money for SS/Medicare, fucked public schools, etc. Progressives will be fearful of speaking out -- no bumper stickers, even, too risky. Wonder where they got the idea? I wonder how much, if any, I'm exaggerating? I listened to Norqist on NOW. He gave the verbally watered down version which will be parroted far and wide on the liberal press. Just think of the bile that will come from surrogates (usual suspects) for these people.

12. but -- dogs love evil-smelling things ....
My neighbor's little Yorkie was rolling in the remains of a dead squirrel just yesterday! With our luck, George W. will think his mess is wonderful, because he'll be able to blame it on everybody who was against him (just as certain right-wingers claim that the reason America didn't win in Vietnam was because the hippies and Commies back home didn't give them a free hand).

16. Hope you're right, Molly!
Damn, I hope she is right, and that the chicken is going to rot around his Chimperial Majesty's neck, and he will be SEEN to be responsible and he will be discredited and rendered ignominious.

Others have made this same argument to me -- that it is good that president pinhead is stuck with the mess he created.

Me, on the other hand, think we've crossed from the Weimar republic stage into early fascism. Bush doesn't give a shit about the mess he has made. Nor do his fellow fascist supporters, or, apparently, much of the electorate. Prediction: he is going to pull out all the stops and carry out the most radical agenda in American history. Prediction: regional war in Middle East, and no one except Americans are fooled about why we are there, and yes, it is, at least to some degree, a crusade to neutralize Muslims. 50% of the nation rejects him -- there will be confrontations as he acts with ever increasing boldness.

Bush may be the dog with the chicken around his neck, but the stink of it is going to bring misery to many thousands here and elsewhere. Yeah, eventually Mussolini and Mrs Mussolini ended up shot by their own people and hanging from a tree, which kinda says that eventually good sense will prevail, but gee, it took a LOT of turmoil and death before Mussolini was finally discredited for his ruinous dictatorship....

Call me Eeyore, but I see very dark times ahead. It would have been nice to have elected these madmen out of office, but, ooops, looks like elections are just theatre now, just like other banana republics....
