Thune vs. Obama, what a contrast!
The biggest difference I saw was that Obama said things, shared some actual thoughts with us. Thune, on the other hand, seemed to have had his brain removed by the GOP leadership.

I hope half the voters of SD are happy with their new worthless empty shell of a senator. :toast:

4. Thanks for saying this
The few times I've had the misfortune of hearing Thune, he seemed like a phoney, mean-spirited, despicable asshole. Daschle was certainly a flawed Democrat, but shame on South Dakota for putting this piece of filth in D.C.

2. Obama seems to be a truly brilliant, thoughtful man.
His addition to the Senate should be heavily applauded. The man seems genuinely concerned about the ENTIRE population - not a simplistic RED vs. BLUE outlook.

3. South Dakota did, however, elect a 33-year-old, female Democrat to
Congress, and by a fairly safe margin, so they're not all bad!

The GOP spent millions on Thune - it one of the most expensive races in the country.

It certainly didn't hurt Thune that a lot of Democrats seemed to want him to win. I can't believe how many DUers professed satisfaction that Daschle lost.

5. the GOP's anti-Daschle campaign extended to DU
there was a relentless propaganda push against him, that was very un-DU-like in its virulence and homophobia. For a long time, every time Daschle's name came up, a few DUers (who are no longer here) would post that picture of Daschle in ballet gear. The tone of the anti-Daschle rhetoric was more FreeRepublic than DU.

Which makes perfect sense, if you think about it.

6. Ah, yes. The pink tutu Dems picture.
It annoyed the hell out of me every time I saw it.

Agreed - those same posters would ignore Daschle's 26 years in Congress and focus on a few well-chosen items to complain about.

The biggest losers are South Dakotans, though it will take a while for them to realize it. They traded one of the most powerful Democrats from South Dakota ever and 26 years of tenure for a one-term Congressman. Dumb!
