I've been wanting to ask, in re Farenheit 911 |
|
What was the story behind not one US Senator signing the protest petitions/papers that the House members, non-white to a man or woman ;> tried to present?
I'm a life long NY'er so I'd like to know where was lil Chuckie Schumer? To a much lesser degree her being brand-new & all {sorry e.e. cumming ;} I'd like to know where was Hillary?
I sure hope someone knows out there -- I'm really quite curious to find out what happened with the Democratic, at least, Senators.

1. I know at the time they said it wouldn't change anything. |
|
They didn't think they could change the outcome of the election so it wasn't worth it.

11. That's a VERY weak argument |
|
the Democratic Senators made, then... (MO of course)
Symbolism can be quite as strong as even reality! Ask Dr. Martin Luther King, ask Mahatma Gandhi; if I may bring up their sainted names.
Symbolism shows a sure determination and intent. It still shows the moral *if I may use that word - it being devalued as of late* the moral rightness of an action, even if it doesn't happen to be among the majority's opinion at that point in time.
Determination and Intent. Those 2 words seem strangely missing from the Democratic party the last 4 years.
BTW, LOVE your handle/name! Pre-Pirates of the Caribbean? :)

2. I was wondering, too. To watch that was a travesty and |
|
was one of the times anger and sadness for our country welled up in me really, really badly. That was the most preposterous non-action I've ever seen. Surely, Ted Kennedy? Hillary? Byrd? What the heck happened?

It was extremely painful to watch Maxine Waters stand there and nearly beg her fellow democrats to stand up to the issue and to be met with absolute silence. I think I will drop a line to Schumer and Clinton and remind them of that time. I voted a straight Democratic this time as I always have done and Schumer was on that ballot. I just want to remind him that we are watching even more carefully this time around... Petition for Dr. Dean to be Chair of DNC http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/deanfordnc

6. My understanding is that Gore asked them to stand down |
|
Something about it then becoming a tie that he would have to break -- effectively crowning himself President.

10. Why then do us Democrats insist on being so scrupulously fair? |

You KNOW the R'Pukes would have done that in a Dick Cheney heartbeat; and here we are STILL trying to 'rise above it all'
Yet all the while sinking us and our people and our country deeper and deeper and deeper into some really fathomed chit.
And, IMO of course, if we keep on this course; we are going to lose more and more unto Fascism (yea, if it's not long-begun already)
I'm sorry, but in these kinds of circumstances we have to consolidate at least SOME power to be able to fight back on an equal footing. ...and yes, by even their means if necessary!
Esp. after Kerry (Damn his eyes!) rolled over so quickly, thus making any vote count moot (that high strangeness and what reasoning behind it is something we should ALL ponder deeply!) opened the Puke's up even more than before to the fact that their shenanigans seemed to have worked.
Again.
If this is so, we shall never EVER see the system of checks and balances restored, up and working again as our forefathers had designed. The 2 party system was too small to begin with, now we're virtually at one -- and it's the WRONG PARTY!
The choice is the lesser of two evils, it appears to me.
Our magnificent system of government ruined by one party and their greed and lies, while we lay down as doormats for their convenience must not continue! I'd rather preserve what government and rights we have and apologize later over NOT being a stickler for and being insistently & totally even-handed when dealing with these "Moral Values, Compassionate Conservative, Uniting not Dividing, With Us or Against Us, Evangelical yet committing every God-Damned Sin" CRACKPOTS!
*sigh*
Edit: Fixed typo -- who knew God-Damed was a word? :>

7. If the Senators had contested, the vote would |
|
be sent to the House. It's a Republican majority, so the outcome was clear. Contesting it was largely symbolic.

8. When the Black Congressional Caucus protested the election fraud |
|
Only one white man in Congress stood with them, Representative Bob Filner (D)CA, from right here in San Diego. He told me at a local Democratic Club meeting a few weeks later that he had expected others to follow him and was surprised to find that he alone stood with the BCC.
As for Senators, I am proud to say that as each Democratic senator contacted me in fundraising later on, I sent back the envelope with a note enclosed asking where they had been on that fateful day, if they were as liberal as their letters implied.
We have just gotten our FIRST black senator since reconstruction, Barak Obama. If he is seated before the electoral votes are counted, the BCC will have a senator's signature for their petition this time. Otherwise they won't. PROTECT, the children's political lobby supported by Andrew Vachss, has a motto: "Actions are truth." When it comes to politicians, ignore what they say and watch what they do.
