Some thoughts about the DRAFT
On Nov. 4, 2004, the CFRs were printed requiring cross-referencing of Dept of Education Student Loans (from College databases?) with the Registration rolls of the Selective Service System.

Over the course of last winter, the Selective Service System filled all of the unfilled posts on local draft boards. Also, the SSS is required to report to the president in March 2005, their readiness to begin inductions within 90 days.

During the campaign, a couple of interesting things happened:

a. Dubya said during the debates that the Draft was just rumors on the "internets".
b Dubya said that we would always have a volunteer military (even after his Freudian slip)
c. House Republicans hurriedly and unexpectedly called up Charlie Rangel's bill for creation of a draft and soundly defeated it.

I have absolutely no doubt that the Repubs see a draft coming in the very near future....they are taking all of the necessary administrative measures to institute a draft. If it has webbed feet and quacks, it's a duck, dammit!

After all the denials during the campaign, I don't believe these neocons can just arbitrarily reconstitute the draft. I believe they will have to have some kind of National Emergency in order to pull it off and blackmail Congressional Democrats into voting FOR IT. Do you think that is the tactic? What would constitute a national emergency to justify a draft?

1. Nuclear attack?
From a dirty bomb or something like it. Isn't that what Cheney has been referring to all along?

2. If it's in a blue state... it's not Al Qaeda.
The latest tape is pretty clear on who will be attacked.

3. These people are totalitarian fascist!
If that's what they need that's what they will do.

Maybe aroung the time of the 2006 elections, because you know Jesus wants them to have a supermajority.

And the draft will be rigged against the blue states.

4. Rather than instituting a draft, per se, I believe they're going
to implement some sort of "service" requirement in order to qualify for......

I think it will start with a "carrot" rather than "stick" enticement.

It will have an Orwellian "feel-good" name.

As you can tell, it's not a complete (conspiracy) theory, yet.

I'd love to hear other ideas about this.

Thanks for posting.

7. Yeah, pretty nutso, but I believe very possible.
Homeland Security and the Patriot Act are 2 of those types of Orwellian events.

What many of us here at DU forget, is Orwell was only one early critic of what may happen and how. There was also Huxley's "Brave New World" which, if I remember correctly, is how we'll "drug" ourselves into compliant automatons. I see our particular "choice" of drug to be media in all its forms.

Anyway, my 0.02.

What would constitute a national emergency to justify a draft?
I think we can all guess the answer to that question.

Thanks, 51% of America. I FEEL SOOOOO MUCH SAFER NOW!!!
