"What does California have in common with Texas? It turns out, not very much."

Oh, Great Uniter, George W. Bush.

2. and it will be brother against brother
don't think this is just a blue state/red state thing. There are plenty of progressives/liberal relgionists in the red states that won't stand for the nazification of this country. As I recall, when the assault weapons ban was lifted, there were posters here that said they were glad, so they could get ready for the civil war to come. I hope it doesn't come down to this, but I could see where, in some people's minds, it could.

Last I heard he won by almost 900,000 votes.

And last I heard they were missing 900,000 votes somewhere.

Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 05:23 PM by beam_me_up
Fascist SS son of satin Arnold being groomed for the Presidency just as soon as he shows what a macho man he is taking care of this state after the huge terrorist strike here sometime in the relatively near future. Tellevision will make him look like a great savior, unlike the wempy ass born again Xtian thing Bushy is supposed to be.They'll get the defense of marriage constitutional amendment first to verify they can control that vote then go for the amendment to allow foreign-borns be elected to the highest office.

You'll see.

7. They can't win
I think that we are already in a cultural war. And it's a war the right will lose.
The right has been at war for years, while the rest of the country has been oblivious or in denial. But they've already pealed away all the knuckle draggers they can. Meanwhile they've kept the moderate Repubs on board by singing soothing bullshit. That's over now.

The right will not settle for a big tent, or be inclusive. After Roe is overturned (and it will be overturned), and abortion and reproductive rights are completely vulnerable. After judicial troglodytes are pushed through by the truckload. After SS is looted. After medicare is destroyed- the Susan Collins, Lincoln Chafee, Olympia Snowe, and all other moderates that are left in the GOP will either be purged or forced to leave the party.

The current GOP mindset is more like the Bolsheviks than Eisenhower. They are destroying their own party. the only problem is that in the meantime they are also destroying our country.

10. Civil War is a GOOD thing
However terrible war may be, howevermuch it will please our enemies, a civil war will finally purge us of the detritus of history that has hung around our neck like an albatross for 200 years. It is time to get rid of those who stand in the way of the Enlightenment plan of our forefathers. Just as the 1860-1865 settled the conservative issue of slavery, a new civil war will settle the conservative issue of the role of religion in this society. The only way to do it, unfortunately, is with civil war - and all that it means.

And if any of you are squeamish on the subject, I should remind you that THEY started shooting first and WE have suffered the only casualties. Look at the bullet-riddled corpses of MLK, abortion providers, homosexuals - anyone who has dared to pose a political challenge to them, or whose very life has made a mockery of their beliefs, they have MURDERED. For 20 years I've told people that this is the inevitable result of the "culture war" and now my friends have called me to say I was right. I wish I wasn't right. But conflicts are often irrepressible, sometimes beneficial, and we are at a defining moment in history.

27. This is not a game ....
It's not simply a matter of whether you root for one side or another. You pick your side and stand up for it, as men do. I am on the side of liberty. For centuries ideals have lived or died in the crucible of serious times and that is where we are today. It's no longer about who controls the House or the Senate, who writes policy - it's who will defend the fundamental principles of liberty, freedom and constitutional democracy. One side is for it; the other side wants to destroy it. If you don't think that battle is here and now, then no convincing is possible because it couldn't be clearer than if you were already on the cattle car rolling out to the concentration camps. Will you let your children and children's children be slaves to despotic small minds, or would you have them born in a land where they may choose their own destiny? There are no longer any shades of grey - rather they are now starkly red and blue. This nation cannot continue half slave and half free, someone once said. It was once a case of bondage of human beings; now it is an issue of whether human minds will freed, with each individual able to choose the combined destiny of mankind. I know not what course others may take. But, as for me, give me liberty - or give me death.

29. war sucks
Organizing and taking back our democracy is a much more preferable alternative. I've had similar thoughts, but the destruction we'll face and the dead that will pile up are not really necessary. It may take 30-40 years of organized effort to reclaim our democracy, but it can be done without slaughtering our neighbors, friends, and family.

What we need to do is to start running for local political offices, supporting unions, firing up printing presses and starting labor newspapers, things like that.

17. I can't imagine it happening
Think about it - even in the reddest red states there are lots of Democrats and liberals. The opposite holds true in the bluest blue states.

The government has the power. They have the army and the police. They would not let such a civil war happen IMO - from either side.

What is more likely is a return to the sixties type stuff. Protests, riots, and unrest....

But a full blown civil war like what we had in the 1860s? I just can't see it happening.

22. Id said this before
In a different post its not going to be a civil war like the last one
No Dem's and repukes showing up in blue and red.
If one state leaves the union on either side its the start of it war would break out quite quickly because if its a blue state the red states would try to Regain control of it + with infighting in the state it would be more chaos then any thing.
if its a red state I'm sure they will try to stop the any blue people from leaving it at the point of a gun rather quickly
could it happen its possible there is not enuff police to quell large scale disturbances and the national guard is busy ATM some were else.
so if there is a large mass of people that want it in a state thats a Commonwealth who's to stop them. at that point its there choice.

The problem people are seeing on our side is how can you go though a a logical discussion with people if logic has no place with repukes. There Faith says there right and we are wrong we present facts and arguments and there all wrong because if there faith is infallible then were attacking there religion. We will always be wrong to them because we don't follow there blind faith.
you know what they say about when the talking stops. People on bolth sides are starting to see theres no use any more.

I think "civil war" is a term of art here. All we have to do is surround the Wal-Marts, keep the fundies from shopping there, and they'll surrender with no bloodshed.

28. No civil war
First, I am ANTIwar. I side with Mohandas K Ghandi and Martin Luther King AND Jesus of Nazareth! No war, no hatred, no violence! Turn those swords into ploughshares and start planting positive memes everywhere! Be the Johnny Appleseeds of good works and good thoughts! Face injustice and inequality with ever-obstinate non-violent resistance! If we are to bring forth a progressive end, we have to achieve it with progressive means -- not by reverting to the hatred and violence we seek to overcome.

Hatred ever kills, love never dies such is the vast difference between the two. What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves a burden in reality for it increases hatred.
    ---Ghandi

Second, to those who indulge in the idea of a "civil war" -- the war of 1860-65 is NOT possible today. America is not a melting pot of homogenous regions, it is a unrelenting jambalaya. We don't have the convenience of "North" vs. "South". Even in the reddest states too many of our brothers and sisters are at home. A "civil war" would mean the worst excesses of "Turner Diary" evil made real.

To all the people on this thread who are scared to death of visions of Appomatox etc...

Um. Noone is talking about an actual civil WAR. Sherman, Lee, Grant, etc are all dead. Atlanta won't be razed again(much to my chagrin).
What we are talkin about is a struggle for the soul of our nation. OK?

Carry on.
