There are limits, even for conservatives |

I live in Arkansas, a state that went for Bush. Newton County went Republican, which it has done for ages, except when Bill Clinton ran for President. This year, the RNC spent some cash trying to get a Republican in the sheriff's office. He didn't even come close-the incumbant, an independent, won. Here's why. The Repuke candidate promised to come by and personally visit every household in the county every six months. When folks thought about the Sheriff poking around on their land and in their private affairs, they voted him down, despite the very distinct possibility that money was offered for votes (it has happened in the past, I've been told).
If people see their immediate security and privacy threatened, they don't vote Republican. I think our goal is to take whatever threats to our freedoms that Bush puts out and to state them in immediate, personal terms.

1. Especially since the Repubs have purged their libertarian wing.. |

The right wingers who were also paranoid about a police state aren't around much anymore. This leaves an opening for pro-civil liberties Democrats to gain some advantage
