1. I don't "ham" but I'm starting to think that I should start learning to do
so...if the "moral majority" starts deciding to try to interfere with our ability to communicate the cultural revolution and "real news" via the internet, then we will all need to switch to the "Air"...They can't control that, can they?

3. Not unless they have some sort of frequency jamming technology. At any
rate, definitely look into it. HAMS are very helpful during times of emergency. :)

7. The ham bands are very broad
So it would not be feasible to jam all of them without jamming a lot of essential services as well.

it might get slow and less useful, but they'll never be able to stop it

heck, if it comes to it, we can do IP over ham radio!

4. I am a ham and that's all that I am
I bought a Yaesu HT to stay in contact when backpacking. I found out that the places I go don't have repeaters. I did a trip in the Grand Canyon that did have a repeater. I could hit it from the North Rim or the canyon, but nobody answered. I tried to make contact for some poor fool who got stuck in the canyon overnight and go no answer. Must be a sleepy place.

23. The fool was trying to go Rim-to-rim-to-rim in one day
North rim to South Rim and back in one long day. That's about 45 miles, with two hellacious climbs. He bonked and ended up bivouacking in my tent at the 38 mile point. Get this, he was about 60 years old.

Good hearted backpackers brought him a sleeping pad and warm clothes to sleep in. Then the fool had the bad taste to bitch about Clinton creating a National Monument in his state of Utah. I changed the subject.

I saw a lot more than he. They call those types "trail runners". They create an awful lot of commotion on the trail while they get their fitness buzz a' going. I think they are obnoxious, coming up from behind and expecting you to get over just because they want to run past.

I suppose if I could not get a backpacking permit, I might do what they do, try to get a lot of hiking in in one day.

9. I considered getting a license but I monitor on SSB and find
a lot of guys just talking about their equipment! Seem to be a lot of good ol boys ...

I rely on shortwave exclusively for radio now and it's really great!!!
At least I get the news and some inteligent analysis and programming from Radio Canada, the BBC, and Radio Netherlands....among others.

15. Buy a copy of "Passport To World Band Radio"
It comes out every year and has good reviews of all kinds of receivers.

If you are short on funds, get an old copy from a library, and look for items used on eBay.

10. I got my General ticket at age 12 in 1954 & was active for years, but let
it expire in the early 70s...seemed to be getting too much like Children's Band (CB)...I built the first repeater west of the MS river
in 63 (?) on my mom's back porch, a 1/4 KW Motorola xmtr & an old 5V receiver that I cobbled down to the 2M band and a squelch operated relay. I called it K5ETH Repeater (that was my call) because the FCC didn't really have any repeater rules in place back then. It's now
WA5LVT (34/94 same as where I first set it)...I just lost interest...

alternative to long distance phone calls, but I too lost interest. I need to renew my ticket cause if I let it lapse I sincerely doubt I could pass that test again. *l*

these days...;-)
If I thought I needed to communicate, I'd just go ahead and make up a call, build a transmitter and do it...screw the license.

21. OK, DU hams, let's get together on this
this is a good start at a directory.

I am going to move the conversation over to another messageboard so we can pick up some progressives who may be Hams but are not DUers.

Please check in here so we can all get connected:
http://www.livejournal.com/community/thought_express/2946.html?mode=reply

Once we seem to have filled out our ranks, I propose we send an email list around to print out with our handles and locations and what rigs we use (my family is generally 2m, so we can't reach that far. Our next contact will most likely have to be in the northern New England region) and what frequencies we want to peg down as "ours".

Sound good?

I'm only a Tech, though. Husband is an Extra and we did post several months ago asking for any other DUers who were hams. I think we only got one response at the time. We were looking to try to set up a peace net to the world.

I have to run to get ready for work but will check in later this evening.

Technician level, although I haven't done much lately either. I used to be really active in a group but seem to have slacked off lately. Great group of people, though--ham radio is a real equalizer--all types of people enjoying the same hobby! I need to get back into the swing of things!

35. No ham, but I've been listening to shortwave for over 40 years.
Everyone on DU should own a shortwave. If you can't afford a nice tabletop from companies like Drake, Yaesu, Kenwood, or Icom, then at least get one of the nicer portables from Grundig, Sony, or Sangean. There are not that many brick and mortar stores selling them, so you might want to check out Universal Radio in Ohio or see what's available on eBay. Some of the nicer Radio Shack models are also good for starters.

Tonight, I'm listening to the replay of Alex Jones on 3.215 MHz. While he is considered a total kook by some, he does have some good info on his shows. Bev Harris has been a guest on several occasions.

36. Funny this would come up now
It seems that about once a year, I get the "itch" to take my rig out of the box and get an antenna up in my backyard. This past weekend, I got that itch, but didn't get to "scratch" it. Hm - Perhaps I will this weekend.
