Scientists prefer to work in Canada, survey says

TORONTO - Scientists would like to work at the University of Toronto more than just about any other place in Canada or Europe, a new survey suggests.

The survey by The Scientist magazine polled more than 35,000 scientists who were asked to rank the best places to work in the U.S. and other countries.

Research funding, lifestyle cited
Four other Canadian schools made the non-U.S. top 10

"The quality of life is greater than anywhere else in the world, especially when compared to, say, major U.S. cities," he says. "On my academic salary I was able to buy a house right away in a quiet, green neighborhood, only a 10-minute bike ride away from our downtown campus. As the Canadians say: Awesome!"

Elementary school, high school, university, graduate school

Colleges are trade schools.

7. Yup
University of Waterloo is considered the top one..made their rep on Wat 4 and Wat 5...Microsoft hired many grads.

Big physics R & D lab going in there...a gift from a Canadian physicist who did well.

Most unis here have top notch tech depts though. Robotics, biomed, etc.

9. I work in a lab in a prominent US university and ...
we have lots of students from Waterloo come down every year. They are all very bright and just the nicest kids you could meet. :)

(Gee -- I sound just like Bush and his "Poland" thing -- sorry!)


Ryerson in Ontario started out as a polytechnic but is now a university.

8. Yes indeed
Doctors are in short supply everywhere, but in Canada you are guaranteed patients, money, and a nice lifestyle.

And you never have to turn anyone away because of money. Everything is paid for by the government.

10. Its working out very well for the teaching hospitals $-wise
because the foreign students pick up the full tab (no subsidies).
