Y'all See This ??? - New York Times Killed "Bush Bulge" Story
PRESS RELEASE:
New York Times Killed "Bush Bulge" Story

November 5, 2004

<snip>

Five days before the presidential election, the New York Times killed a story about the mysterious object George W. Bush wore on his back during the presidential debates, journalist Dave Lindorff reveals in an exclusive report on this week's CounterSpin, FAIR's weekly radio show. The spiked story included compelling photographic and scientific evidence that would have contradicted Bush's claim that the bulge on his back was just a matter of poor tailoring.

"The New York Times assigned three editors to this story and had it scheduled to run five days before the election, which would have raised questions about the president's integrity," said Lindorff. "But it was killed by top editors at the Times; clearly they were chickening out of taking this on before the election."

Lindorff says two other major newspapers, the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times, also decided not to pursue the story, which featured a leading NASA satellite photo imaging scientist's analysis of pictures of the president’s back from the first debate.

The Times' bulge story is the latest example of possible self-censorship by major news media during the election campaign. In September, CBS's 60 Minutes decided to delay until after the election an investigative segment that questioned the Bush administration's use of forged Niger uranium documents in making its case for the Iraq war, saying that "it would be inappropriate to air the report so close to the presidential election" (New York Times, 9/25/04; FAIR Action Alert, 9/28/04).

1. After the election the WH said it was a bullet proof jacket
they said they didn't want to reveal that during the campaign.

I dunno. Makes sense to me.

4. Sure is an odd shape for a bullet proof jacket.
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 08:17 PM by kayell
looks like something electronic or medical to me.

Wonder why he would have needed to wear it last December inside the White House if it was a bullet proof jacket? Come on now, when has * EVER told the truth, even when it wouldn't be a problem? Compulsive liars lie.

12. The whatsits he's wearing in THAT photo doesn't begin to resemble
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 08:28 PM by JudiLyn
the EXTREMELY 3 DIMENSIONAL in high relief he wore during the debates.

Here's a photo of a bullet proof vest:

I'm sure someone can lay hands on the ones we were examining soon. There's no comparison between something which is basically flat, and something which stands up almost an inch high in a peculiar container shape between the shoulder blades.

15. But the thing in the debate photos also does not resemble a bp jacket.
My personal suspicion is some kind of medical device. This also could explain why in photos of * in shirt sleeves taken after the debate, no bulge is evident. Many of those pics were taken in much more accessible locations than the debate forums. Taking off a medical device could also explain the pics of * during that time that show a severely depressed and blotchy face.

I still suspect a transmitter based on wierd verbal twitches, but that it was smaller, and less visible.

Why on earth would we believe the WH on ANYTHING anymore? They have long since proven that the surest way to know they're lying is that they're lips are moving.

6. it makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever
if they didn't want to mention it during the campaign, why would it be ok for them to mention it now? it STILL reveals details about his security, so whatever supposed rationale they had for not disclosing it then, still holds.

the ONLY this that changed after the election, is that there's no voters to face. in other words, anytime they say "we couldn't talk about it before the election but we can talk about it afterwards" it is 100% political damage control.

5. Once I saw a picture of that on slo mo on tv,
I was 100% sure it was a bulletproof vest.

So they censored themselves to not tip off terrorists to shoot at the head. Not that they wouldn't anyway if they watched any tv at all, but they think terrorists are likely to be suckers, so there.

8. Shooting at Bush's head...
...may not have any effect whatsoever. It may be the screw-on, detachable type. Made of life like laytex, which is why it bloats and blotches so quickly under the glare of press conferences.

7. It wouldn't have mattered anyway.............................
apparently a majority (or so claimed anyway) of Americans like their pResident to be a liar. He blatantly lied to Americans about the reason for going to war, he lied about countless other things, but the God fearing 'Murkins didn't seem to care. Having a lying, cheating pResident is FAR batter than some Massachusetts LIEberal as President.
 God damned sheep, being led to the slaughter by a man with a room temperature IQ.

11. Couple of things
Does anyone have a link to the White House admitting this?

Because they clearly said that there was nothing there -- AND ridiculed people for saying that there was something there. Not once, but bunches of times. BTW, why does he need a vest during the debates -- in a room security controlled??

Perhaps it is true, but think about the difference this might have made with all those people out there talking about the brave president.

Good grief.

14. It wouldn't have mattered anyway
They might have had to manipulate a few more votes, but the outcome of the election would have stayed the same.

23. Since 9/11, the New York Times pretty much sucks
And even Gore Vidal has said so.;)

I know they've got a handful of good op ed people (well, at least Paul Krugman) and their music, art and "cultural" coverage has a pretty cool progressive angle sometimes.

That still doesn't make up for failing to critically investigate the biggest disaster in the history of New York, killing numerous worthwhile stories and publishing sanctimonious B.S. that makes right wing dominance seem inevitable, and all resistance futile...

I've given up reading 'em...Newsday is a better general interest paper covering the NYC metro area, NY Press is more hip...and some British sources are better for global coverage.
