TIME TO ACT! OVERTIME VOTE ANY DAY NOW!!! |
|
FWD THIS EVERYWHERE...PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Senate debate on "President" Bush's overtime pay cuts will begin this week with a vote expected any day. This is the most important chance we've had to block the overtime pay cuts before they go into effect. We know you may have acted before, but PLEASE ACT AGAIN TODAY by clicking on the link below and sending a message to your U.S. senators asking them to support the Harkin Amendment that would block the Bush overtime pay cuts. It will only take a minute and will make a big difference.

The overtime pay cuts proposed by the Bush administration could take away overtime pay from at least 8 million workers. Overtime pay protections are the heart of the 40-hour workweek--and even the weekend. Without them, employers would have no reason to treat workers fairly--they could require longer and longer days without paying workers extra for their overtime hours. Click below to take action, or keep reading.

The Bush overtime pay take-away would save employers billions--right from workers' paychecks. They would allow employers to do almost anything they want by blurring the rules for overtime eligibility. One congressional study of the Bush overtime changes said they would allow employers to do almost anything.
The Bush administration changes could make large numbers of workers who have job-related training ineligible for overtime, for example. Health care, technical, computer, law enforcement, firefighting and skilled trades training could cost workers their right to overtime pay. This is completely outrageous and we need to stop it.

The overtime pay takeaway won't just hit workers in the pocket. According to the Economic Policy Institute, "The millions of employees who will see their pay reduced will, in all likelihood, see their hours of work increase at the same time. Once employers are not required to pay for overtime work, they will schedule more of it."
Tens of millions of working families depend on overtime pay. Please act today. ALREADY ACTED? PLEASE ACT AGAIN: SPREAD THE WORD!!!

6. cheap-labor republican move |
|
Overtime pay cuts reduces take home pay for workers with a job (since they make less for their overtime) AND reduces employment (since employers will be less motivated to hire additional workers, rather than just working their existing ones longer).
While the total hours for existing workers will go up, their pay is almost certain to go down.
So this is a lose-lose situation for the American worker. The corporations and their owners are the only winners.
If it reduces the cost of labor, Bush will do it. Regardless of the consequences. He's nothing if not consistent.

7. I think it can pass the Senate |
|
we'll get every Democrat except Zell probably, so all we'll need is Chaffee, Snowe and Specter to cross over (even though he's lurching to the right due to his primary challenge, I don't think "Arlen Specter voted to stop the Bush adminstration from cutting your overtime pay!" would be a good campaign point.). But the presidential candidates better show up, unlike Gephardt who let it pass by 3 votes.

8. The problem is that Specter is the sponsor of the base bill |
|
and he might not take kindly to amendments.
I did ask his LA back in early August, and she said he was undecided on the issue....

9. Collins and midwesterners |
|
Susan Collins is just as likely to vote with us as Olympia Snowe is. Both are just about as moderate as the other one. Also, I could see Zell siding with us on this one. Only 3 democrats voted with the republicans in the House. They were Dooley, Hall and Stenholm and if Ken Lucas voted with the democrats than Zell Miller might as well. Miller does seem to care about working class people, he is just too stupid to sometimes know what is good for them. So I think that Collins, Chafee, Snowe, and Specter provide good oppurtunities as well as some midwesterners like Grassley, Fitzgerald, DeWine and Voinovich that have been known to stand up the republicans every once in a while.

10. Kit Bond and James (no) Talent |
|
are my Senators so I don't know how much effect my e mail will have on them. Both are pretty far to the right, especially James (no) Talent.
We were just told today that there will be layoffs so this is not a good day.

Best of luck in not getting screwed. I survived the last round of layoffs at my job a year or so ago - but with an impending buyout of my company by a right-wing media baron (you do the math), I'm extremely worried about my own position in the future.
Plus, my numerous bumper stickers and "Whitey Will Pay" t-shirt probably won't win me any points with the new owners.
Stay strong. Once we get these fools out of office, we can get this country back in shape. It may take a while, but we've got no other choice.
