AP: "Oregon Couples Fret Over Gay Marriage Ban "
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 09:28 PM by abernste
PORTLAND, Ore. - As she watched her 3-year-old son convert a box into a spaceship, Kelly Burke was dreading the arrival of a letter that could change their lives. The stay-at-home mom and her partner of 15 years, Dolores Doyle, are among the nearly 3,000 gay couples who wed in Oregon this spring. Now the status of those marriages, and the benefits that come with them, is unclear after Oregon voters decisively approved a ban on gay marriage this past week.

"The mailman came this morning and I panicked," said Burke, who relies on Doyle's employer for health insurance. "My first thought is: 'Oh my God, here comes the letter. They're cutting me off.'"

<SNIP>

I usually never curse in my posts, but how the FUCK can these pigs claim to be the party of family values??

Look, I'm a 30 year old straight male, so this issue doesn't affect me one bit. And yet, stories like this make me so incredibly angry that I almost can't function.

1. same here
I know lots of same-sex couples here who are raising kids in loving families, including some of my kids' best friends.

I cannot imagine the government telling them they cannot live together, have kids together, visit each other in hospital, and all the other things that we married couples just take for granted.

It is evil!

2. We have no right to call ourselves civilized
I find this appalling. And, I live in Oregon. Tried my best to promote the "No on 36" message. Too many people afraid of what they don't understand.

Thank goodness we straight people can still set our moral compass by Britney Spears and Rush. Ugh.

4. Will this be the start
of a really horrendous rollback of civil rights? and will America set up camps, like for the Japanese, labor camps?

:scared:
