Iconoclast may have to leave town... (crawford tx paper endorsed Kerry)
(snip) As democrats resign themselves to four more years with George W Bush in the White House, one beleaguered newspaper is discovering the dire consequences of taking on the President in his own backyard.

The Lone Star Iconoclast, in Crawford, Texas, where Mr Bush has a ranch ... a week ago, in an editorial misjudgment of staggering proportions, the newspaper - circulation 920 - decided to endorse John Kerry in the race for the White House.

Readers, wrote the paper's editor, Leon Smith, "should not rate the candidate by his home town or even his political party, but instead by where he intends to take the country". President Bush, he continued, "has let us down" on Iraq and the economy....

But the Iconoclast's readers, many of whom profit from the regular visits of tourists, journalists and the occasional world leader to Crawford, are furious.

The newspaper has been flooded with angry letters, readers are boycotting it and shops refusing to stock it.

As a result, Mr Smith is considering pulling out of town. "The hate mail hasn't stopped," he told The Telegraph.

2. that's interesting, they seem to be doing well, I got a subscription
and the past three weeks since the endorsement editorial, the paper has been filled with a 50/50 balance of letters pro-Kerry/pro-Bush and it looks like lots of DU-ers and other dems sent money for some pretty decent ads featuring endorsements for Kerry and for Free Speech and Press.

Is this an old story?

7. "...in an editorial misjudgment of staggering proportions"
How can an editorial be a misjudgment? Bizarro.

8. it happens.. I used to be the editorial page editor for our local paper...
and sometimes you take a stupid position and pay the price for it. However, this was not one of those cases... I think this Brit newspaper reporter just figured that since the edit may drive the paper out of business, it was a "misjudgement." Depends on whether you think having an anti-Bush voice in Crawford is worth more than USED to having one there. I'm sure the newspaper owners regret the consequences, if they occur, but are proud of the decision to print the edit.

9. the brit paper telegraph is a trash rag
It was the only british paper to re-print the liabellous untruths
repeated from the american press about my buddhist teacher... and
i've noticed they have a track record of deceptive journalism.

Perhaps, we at DU should rub together our pocket books and buy some
shares in the crawford paper to keep them up, and to develop an
unimpeachable source of honest views on this bush nightmare that
has a track record of speaking the truth, straight up.
