Poll question: What Think ye of the American people? |
|
We are coming up on an election (although still a year away), and perhaps its a good idea to consider what we think of them. So how would you describe the American people? Bryant Check it out --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

1. you realize this will end up on some right wing site |
|
especially one of those anti DU sites or blogs saying this proves that those of us on the left really don't care for America and all that. So, while I may agree with the possibly negative outcome of the poll am not sure it's worth it, it's not going to solve a darn thing and only give the dishonest right more bullshit ammo to use against us.

This is an unscientific poll of course--but if that is really what Democratic Underground believes, it's better to know than not.

They're so loud, people seem to think they're the accepted norm. I know there are some good and decent folks here, but a lot of them make me really ashamed to be an American native.

6. There's a problem in that choices 1 and 2 are not mutually exclusive. |
|
The herd can be vicious dumbasses, but only BECAUSE they are susceptible to believing whatever they are told. It's hard to choose one or the other, since both statements seem true.

9. I guess the difference |
|
Would be if you think they really are hateful in their hearts. If you think they are hateful, I'd go for choice one--if you think they are just stupid and misinformed and therefore make hateful decisions, vote for number 2.

Well a couple of reactions.
For those of you who selected vicious dumbasses, if you live in the US, why? This isn't a love it or leave it question; I'm really curious. Of course it's possible that you think that people are evil and stupid no matter where you go; it's just the common lot of man.
For those of you who selected stupid and likely to follow whatever they hear; I guess the goal is to make sure they get swayed by our propoganda. Politics is all about fooling the people (or sheeple as some of you no doubt prefer) into voting for your candidate. Since people are too stupid to understand or think for themselves, it is strictly a matter of making sure our propoganda is better than the Republicans. Or am I missing something?

when viewing the world through shit stained glasses. No one would tell you that it's a matter of making our propaganda better on record, get a few drinks in them and make them feel comfortable and that's probably exactly what they will tell you

14. Why I live in the USA |
|
Here's a list of the fragile reasons why I still live in the USA:
- The Bay Area is relatively sane an area of the USA, emphasis on relatively (in the end, we have cheerleaders and Reader's Digests, too) - American universities, especially at the graduate level, are far better than British, Canadian, Indian, and European universities - I turned 18 barely a month ago, so only now I can start thinking of leaving this fucked-up nation - Currently, I'm on a partial scholarship in a public university, so I'm basically leeching money from the American (actually Californian) people, which I think is better than leeching from Canadians
Don't worry, though; chances are that if I'm not in Canada by this time next year, I'll probably be in Canada in 3-4 years. Especially if there's a draft.

Okay, let's consider the following:
- Reader's Digest not only stays in business, but also sells in the millions - 70-something percent of Americans believe in some form of creationism - 87% of Americans couldn't find Iraq on a map aroudn the end of 2002 - Voter turnout is between 4% for primary elections and 50% for presidential elections (in the interest of fairness, though, I'll say that the Republicratic party carries the lion's share of the blame here) - George W. Bush was very close to winning a majority of the vote - American culture is *still* patriotic - just look at the starred-and-striped rags flags that litter practically every square yard possible - Speaking of square yards, the USA is the only country in the world that uses the English system in its entirety (even Britain is rapidly moving to the metric system) - Bush's reelect numbers are in the 40's - given his idiocy and his record they should be in the 20's - Most people regard the recall as a stupid, outdated procedure and lambast California for daring kick out a governor whose approval rates hit rock bottom and have started digging - Who even thinks of going to college for learning rather than for the piece of paper that gets him a better job?

to give up and stop caring.
That said, I think that most Americans are motivated by self-interest, above all else. If we can convince a majority that the Bushies are acting against the collective self-interest, it won't matter how ignorant they are.

You should do commercials for Republicans; you could probably make some money.
Voice over: We hear a lot about liberals today, but what do they really think of the American people?
ElementaryPenguin: They are FUCKING, ARROGANT, IGNORANT, RECKLESS IDIOTS!!!
Voice over: Is this the face of American Liberalism? Vote Republican.

I know that I don't give a fuck about what commericals my words can be used for. I don't give a flying fuck about PR or about rhetoric. What I care about is saying what I think, even if you don't like it or if it, gawd forbid, might not be in the best interest of The Cause.
