Iraqi Resistance: Who's Who Part 3
...

KNOWN GROUPS
Active Religious Seminary (Al-Sadr's Group): This group of Shia Muslims, anti-Zionist in nature, has not engaged in much fighting with US forces, although one incident did result in 2 US soldiers being killed. For the moment, this group appears to have dropped armed struggle, which may be due to numerous US threats to arrest Al-Sadr, the Shia Cleric who leads the group, and the recent arrest of his deputy.

Abu Hafs Al-Masri Brigades: This is a Muslim mujahideen group that operates here and that has branches in Indonesia and elsewhere and touts links to Al-Qaida. They have claimed responsibility for the UN and Nasariya bombings in Iraq and the Marriott bombing in Jakarta. The group is named after Abu Hafs Al Kamel, a famous Muslim warrior during the time of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and Abu Hafs (The Mauritanian), Osama bin Laden's top deputy and Al-Qaeda’s spiritual leader. E-mail statements and Internet postings purportedly signed by the group have claimed responsibility for several operations but none has been confirmed.

Al-Anbar Armed Brigades of Iraq's Revolutionaries: This is an anti-Saddam group that is nationalistic in nature and operates in the Al Anbar Province. The group has claimed responsibility for some attacks.

Ansar Saddam Al-Jihadi : This group first appeared on the scene claiming attacks on October 24, 2003 and is made up of Saddam loyalists. They are said to be an underground formation of highly motivated Ba’ath party militants established by Saddam Hussein in late 1998.
