I received the following email from a friend of mine, Jane. Jane is one of the Band of Sisters who traveled with Wes Clark and John Kerry, to try to open people's eyes to the danger that bush is bringing to our world. She had just received the following letter from a fellow-Sister, who had already lost her husband in the current disaster we call the Iraq War.
If you can help this woman out with a small contribution or with a note of support, please email Jane at jensen@terracom.net Tell her you heard about this on DU (she's not a member here yet). Any note that she receives for Melanie will be printed up and sent along - otherwise, if you want the information for contributing or the address for sending a card directly, she can provide you with that. Jane has only recently entered the cyber-world, so if you feel like you're having difficulty reaching her, please pm me and I'll get hold of her.
An email I rec'd today. If anyone wants to help. So sad! Camp Pendleton marines have taken a great loss. Jane
Dear Band of Sisters and winbackrespect org,
Although we did not get Kerry in office like we had hoped there is some thing that we might be able to do. Not in the political sense but in support of a Marine corp family. Recently I received a call from my old neighbor and good friend from Camp Pendleton, Ca. Her name is Melanie *******. Melanie is a 21year old marine wife with a daughter that just turn 3 years old on September 13th. During her daughters birthday party, shortly after singing happy birthday, Melanie received that fateful knock at her door that every military wife fears.
The same Chaplin that knock on my door to tell me that my beloved husband died knocked on her door as well. Her husband died when a car with a bomb hit a hum-vee he was standing near. (Jay) died at the age of 24 years old and she had not seen him since Feb 28th of this year. Jay had 24 days before he was to go back home. My heart is very heavy for her and once again this hit very close to home for me.
I am starting a collection of donations for Melanies daughter. This will be for her daughters future to help Melanie with raising her daughter alone. All of Melanie's family lives in Guam (where Melanie wishes not to return). My plan is to collect what ever I can (along with any cards or letters for her) and mail this to her.
If you wish to contribute, or if you would prefer to send it to her directly that would be wonderful. After all, the whole idea of getting Bush out of office is so little girls would not have to grow up without their daddy's. Please let me know if any of you might be able to help the *******'s ASAP. Or if your budget is to tight a letter of inspiration to her would be nice also.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to my words.
Your Fellow Sister,
****** ********
Normally I wouldn't feel comfortable forwarding something like this on to DU, but I know Jane, and since the email comes from a fellow-Sister, I have no doubt as to the authenticity of the story (unfortunately). Jane was grateful when I asked if I could forward this on to DU.
A brief note on Jane - her 42-year-old son is a Blackhawk Commander in Iraq. He has two small children waiting at home for him. Jane is 'just an ordinary mom' who has devoted her life to trying to end the war and help John Kerry get elected. She started a Military Families for Peace group here in Madison, has been involved in the Band of Sisters group, and was featured in one of their ads on tv.
Thanks so much.
