EFDAT: I Need 49 STUBBORN Volunteers -- IMPORTANT
(EFDAT = Election Fraud Data Analysis Team = New Hampshire report can be found at www.invisibleida.com)

I am looking for 49 people of STUBBORN disposition, preferably one from each state of the union (not including New Hampshire since its already done).

I need these people to find me some data by contacting their Secretary of State (check out the web page first, and then call if you can't find it posted there) or hunting it down on the web, or whatever it takes. I would prefer the information be put into a spreadsheet, but if it needs to be faxed, I can make that work, too.

I need the following for both the 2000 *and* the 2004 elections:

Total Votes per Candidate By Precinct

Bonus Want = # of Registered Voters Per Party Per Precinct (but not as critical at this stage)

Go look at the www.invisibleida.com website for how I'm looking to see the information formatted.

Also, make sure you record WHO provided the information or WHERE it came from -- its always best to have a chain of custody in case there is a typo someplace! :)

Doing the study for New Hampshire was easy because the Secretary of State put the information up on their web page, for which everyone should sing blessings to him -- openness in government, YEAH! Not every state will make the gathering so easy, so, if you aren't PISSED OFF STUBBORN DETERMINED BUT POLITE, please don't jump on this one (there will be other tasks -- trust me).

If you are volunteering for a state, please start your reply back with the name of the state in all caps so people can scan through the replies quickly to see if their state has been picked up yet. If you can help, or the person doing each state needs more volunteers for whatever reason, keep each state's replies under that first "all caps" posting. (I know this is kind of complicated, but I'm trying to keep this as organized as possible!) :)

Here's a sample --

MICHIGAN -- Your post
(All Michigan replies/problems/issues should now go under this Primary Volunteer's Post.)

If there is a state in the union where DU has no volunteer members, we may have to get someone from another state to head up that collection effort, but if its possible, I'd like to have "natives" pushing for the (should be public) information as much as possible.

Everyone else, please help keep this post kicked until I get the data from everyone.

Thanks so much for all you do! A lot of number cruncher people are ravenous to start playing with the data as soon as we get it and your help is ESSENTIAL!

Best,
Ida Briggs
EFDAT Coordinator

I would really like these numbers explained. This came from the CNN site:

Salazar = 1,023,803

Kerry = 944,052
Coors (R) = 944,520

9. WISCONSIN -
eek and I will cover Wisconsin. I have the 2000 results in a PDF. I'll transfer to an Excel file, and we'll start digging for 2004.

If anyone else can volunteer to help, that would be great. So many of the WI counties don't have their results posted yet, so this could be a big time-consumer.

THANKS!

Ida, I am yours completely tonight, baby! I will be importing and exporting and querying this evening and sending the results straight to you.

When I finish NC I will do SC. When I'm finished with that, I'll take another state and so on and so on.

12. QUESTION about priorities
for Wisconsin - I have the 2000 results in PDF, and unless someone has a magical way to export from PDF to Excel, it will take me a while to transfer the numbers by hand (128 pages of data).

Is it better to fax you the PDF and spend my time collecting 2004 data, or is the 2004 data useless until you have the 2000 in a spreadsheet format anyway?

15. Both are going to need to end up in spreadsheets for the crunching.
Getting the data first is the biggest priority, and then maybe we can get people to help with the data entry if its needed. Make sense?

If twenty DU'ers are willing to transfer two pages each of that PDF file to a spreadsheet, it shouldn't take long, right?

So, concentrate on hunting down 2004. :)

Good questions, too! :)

Their information is at the Secretary of State's website.

I called them and they do NOT have total #'s of voters by party because it is not required that you specify party affiliation when you register.

Here is the link for 2000 election: http://electionresults.sos.state.mn.us/20001107/

Here is the link for 2004 election:
http://electionresults.sos.state.mn.us/20041102/

I am breaking it down. Is there someone else who can help?

When do you need it, besides ASAP? ;)

20. Seriously, I'm making this up as I go.
There is going to be a press conference either Tuesday or Wednesday for the New Hampshire recount effort (I don't have all the details yet), and whatever numbers we have will be reported at that time. I like big numbers -- LOTS OF NUMBERS -- I WANT THEM ALL! Ha, ha, ha! (that's my evil laugh)

But, please keep in mind that I'm also the woman who wants the entire country recounted BY HAND, and that's the goal I'm working towards. These numbers are a tool to make it happen, and I want THAT done before the electoral college meets in December. :)

23. Found it! Just need to format it now
It's too big for a spreadsheet. Can I break it down into different worksheets?

I can zip it all into an Access database as well.

26. Go look at the website for the sample formatting.
It shouldn't be too big for a spreadsheet ... remember, I only need Presidential data at this point....:) (AND GOOD JOB!!!)

21. Perhaps another useful link?
It's not "official" but since I haven't been able to find '02 results for Mass yet anywhere, I thought this might be of interest. Seems the data is already in XL (once you unzip it). Some have party affiliation but not all.

I can't get it into a spreadsheet for you, but here's the address to a PDF showing past voter turn-out: http://www.sos.state.ia.us/pdfs/elections/2004/general/PastTurnout.pdf

Unfortunately, it doesn't show a breakdown of the 2000 votes. I'll give a quick call to the SoS and see if I can get that information too.

ETA: I have a call in to the office. No one seems to be answering phone calls there today. When/If I get the information from the 2000 election, I'll pass it on.

Is there any other way to easily convert from PDF to Excel? I don't have PDF Writer. I have the 2000 Wisconsin returns by precinct in PDF, but it's 128 pages long. We have 3540 precincts in Wisconsin. It would be way cool if I could figure out how to do this other than hand-entering.

54. If you don't have PDF Writer of some sort, you can't do it
There is a free PDF Writer on the web somewhere. Arrrgggh. See if you can Google. If you can't find it, post back and I'll be glad to help.

50. The person has to have PDF Writer!
You can get a free on the web somewhere. Google for it.

I will be glad to help, though. I'll try to write some instructions. I'm going as fast as I can today. Send them on. I'm taking my laptop home tonight and working as well as running stuff on my other computer!

Feeling quite giddy....but it's a good giddy!!!

Now would be a great time to see Kerry's smiling face.

28. PENNSYLVANIA
The county-by-county data is online and I will get it for you.

The precinct-by-precinct I will call the DOS and see where to get it. If it has to be on a county basis it will take awhile because we have 67 counties and some are still pretty rural but I will try.

67. OK I have the county-by-county...
Can't get through all day to the Pennsylvania DOS (phone busy, this is VERY normal for them!) to see about the precinct level data. Will try to search through the Pennsylvania county sites and see if I can find the data there (will take a while!)

In the meantime I am emailing the Pennsylvania County By County results for 2000 & 2004 Presidential results and registration data.

77. IDA -- Can you use this??
It looks like can't get the precinct-by-precinct data for every PA county online. I can get SOME counties, but not all. For those that I CAN get, I can only get data for 2004, and not with breakdown of registered voter party affiliation. And of those, some of them were still on old lever machines in 04 which are pretty tamper-roof.

This will take a huge amount of time and still not be completely what you asked for. How much do you need this? Please let me know if it will really help to give you a county or two, and only for 2004.

The alternative is that I start calling the counties for info, which will probably be on paper, take days and cost big bucks.

109. Isome rough PA votes by county '00 and '04
but not registration info, dang also not third party info

this is CSV (Comma seperated values) copy it to clipboard, paste into notepad, save with ".csv" extension and then open the file with spreadsheet.

I have Arizona in this format too. Will try to get them rotated so counties are rows instead of columns. I've seen no source for PA precinct-level data. This data is from Dept of State website

36. Have you seen this?

Each precinct in Cuyahoga County, Ohio
Highlighted areas represent 90% (very VERY unlikely) and higher (up to 1160.78%) voter TURN-OUT! 29 are above 100%
Calculated from data on county page - http://boe.cuyahogacounty.us/BOE/results/currentresults1.htm

(Ballots Cast/Registered Voters) * 100 = % turn out.
Ballots Cast SHOULD NEVER be more than Registered, thus % should NEVER be higher than 100%

This amounts to 93,136 EXTRA votes beyond 100% in those precincts! This is just for ONE county!

No further evidence needed - a recount MUST be done - and possibly another national election using ONLY paper ballots, hand counts, and observers making sure all counts are valid. I don't trust these computers AT ALL! We should have the UN observe!

I am working on 2000 currently. Sent you an email. I can get pretty much what you want, excluding the 2000 General Election by Precinct. I will call and see if I can get that information.

New Mexico will not have final figures until 11/24/04. Let me know if you want me to the same with the numbers they currently have.

79. Yes -- the smaller the sample size, the easier to identify anomalies.
Because the last breakdown is by machine type at each polling place. But, part one and two involve identifying the trends, so it needs to be at the smallest vote level possible. (Did I mention this was going to require stubborn? LOL)

45. Hey there Harmonyguy
I have a call into the Information Systems people at the State of NM SOS. I am hoping he will be able to break the 2000 election results by precinct in excel format. They do not have it posted on the SOS site for NM. I have the rest of the 2000 general election results, but not broken down the way we need it... yet. The only other alternative is to go into Santa Fe to the SOS office and get the numbers from the canvassing books. YIKES. If we have to, we will. Let me know what I can do, to help out.

Also, the results currently posted for New Mexico are not final. That will not occur until 11/23/04. Rats

What I've got is the 2004 precinct by precinct stuff grabbed over the weekend and 'processed' directly into Excel. Can be re run at any time to grab the latest results.

If you can get 2000 data, that would be great. I believe that we're dealing with a VERY short timeline.

116. No. And now I'm pissed.
I called this again morning to see if I could get my hands on unofficial numbers and was told the SOS website will never have them broken down by precinct. When I questioned the lady on the phone about this to make sure I was understanding her properly she got very snippy and informed me that "providing numbers by precinct is not mandated by the state."

It looks like this information will only be available through each individual county, and so far, Coconino is the only one I saw that has the info available on the web. I will look over the Coconino numbers later, but at this point, I can't promise I'm going to be able to do this due to time constraints. :-(

Edited on Mon Nov-08-04 06:22 PM by Lost Creek
Colorado data will have to be gathered county by county.

I have contacted almost half of the county clerks and also made contact with a local dem. in each county to help. The problem is that some counties are charging lots of money.

Arapahoe county at first quoted $100 for each of 3 reports.

Don't think that I will be able to complete colorado.

For most counties it will be 3 to 4 days before I can get reports by mail.

E-mail me please glennspeegle@yahoo.com

On edit - most of the counties will not release precinct info until after the 17th.

But only one county clerk so far has charged me money, and that's a $2.25 copy charge.

89. Benford's Law Can Detect Fraud
Sorry if this is a hijack but I'm new and can't start a thread.

I noticed some members are working on data and stats and I've got some info to offer for feedback. It's about Benford's Law.

I was intrigued when I first read about it (someone on Dkos mentioned it), and from googling at least one person has applied it to election fraud.

A maths savvy person might be more familiar with it (I see you've got a few here). Here are some links that will explain it, and how it can be used to detect fraud:

*******

http://www.vcrisis.com/index.php?content=letters/200410060742
Benford's Law proves fraud in Venezuela's referendum

http://www.nigrini.com/data_analysis_books/data_analysis_using_access.htm
Using Microsoft Access for Data Analysis and Interrogation
Mark J. Nigrini Ph.D.

The data analysis tests described in this book focus on finding anomalies in data sets. These anomalies will usually be evidenced by abnormal duplications of record fields or especially high or low ratios between related records.

In August, 1993 I accepted a position at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I was convinced that Benford’s Law on its own was a powerful fraud detection technique. My breakthrough came a few years later when on July 10, 1995 The Wall Street Journal published a story titled He’s got their number: Scholar uses math to foil financial fraud. The He was me.

*******

Anything to it? I read the IRS is looking into using it (if not already using it), so it might be something to pursue since you're crunching the data anyway.

BTW, can't find some of the earlier threads this might belong in, so maybe an older member can bring it to the right posters' attention. Thanks.

112. Recount laws by state
(And we've got to work on some of these states. My guess is that they were "guided" to what should be illegal laws. I mean, Arizona, no requested recounts permitted?)

Note that in some states, you don't even have to be a candidate.

Here is a site for recount information, by state:

http://www.electionline.org/site/docs/html/recount_provisions_-_part_1.htm

Here is another site that has the specific law/codes for recounts by state:

http://moritzlaw.osu.edu/electionlaw/procedures_recount07.html

Some states are more open than others. But even in the states where it's tight, the point is not that only the presidential race can be recounted. Any race can. And if the totals are off, the whole authenticity of the election is gone.

113. Time to Get Back to Work --
I need to do some behind the scenes stuff today, but I'm going to be coming to check this thread periodically to answer the questions that I didn't get to last night. Onward! :) Best, Ida

115. MARYLAND - MONTGOMERY COUNTY
With 233 precints in Montgomery county alone this is a huge job for the entire state. I'll do Montgomery and hopefuly others will step of for other counties.

118. QUESTION for IDA!
Hello Ida,

Thanks for the response to my PM. Just the words I needed to hear.

I have a question. Since I'm running into some brick walls (though they'll fall eventually), such as Milwaukee County (almost 400 precincts) that won't be reporting until at LEAST after Friday, is there some point at which we should submit what we DO have, or should we keep it all until we're done with the entire state?

THANKS!!! And thanks for all the work you're putting in on this. I can't wait until we have fair elections again - so we can trust the process. This is the first step.

120. UTAH
It might seem useless in this blood-red state, but I have been working on it. I have only been able to get the information by county so far, but Utah is so sparsely populated that perhaps that is all you will need.

Here is the link to the 2000 Presidential Election results (already put in PDF form by our Governor's office!):

Here is the link to the 2004 Presidential Election. I have put it into excel and will send it to the invisibleida website:

http://electionresults.state.ut.us

I sure hope this helps!

Proud to be one of the *almost* 46% that voted for Kerry in Utah's most liberal county! YEA SUMMIT COUNTY!!!
