Evolution stickers, what about Bible stickers |
|
ATLANTA - A sticker in suburban Atlanta science textbooks that says evolution is “a theory, not a fact” was challenged in court Monday as an unlawful promotion of religion.
The stickers read: “This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully and critically considered.”
Couldn't the same be said for the Bible? When you read the Bible, shouldn't you read it with an "Open mind" and study it carefully and critically? Funny how these religious nuts want you to accept the crazy stories of talking snakes and donkeys at face value, but when it comes to science, they want you to keep an open mind and use critical thinking. How rediculous.

Natural selection is a theory. Furthermore, the word "theory" doesn't mean "a guess" in scientific terms.

these religious nuts think that some scientists just got together one Friday night and came up with the theory of evolution off the top of their heads. Any theory is backed up by the scientific method which invites someone to prove it wrong, in fact it welcomes someone to prove it wrong. So far, the theory of evolution has stood strong and is growing stronger with more and more findings. I have yet to see religion open itself up to such scrutiny.

8. Actually Natural Selection is also a fact. |
|
The only thing that is at issue is if all evolution, particularly speciation was a result of natural selection. That is what really cannot be proven.

The Sky Fairy theory has been put on equal footing with the Evolution theory, and it's gaining ground every day.

5. Well, gravity is a theory, too. |

While the phenomena are 'facts' the explanation for the phenomena is a 'theory' - one which is useful because it can be used to reliably predict a broken toe if the stone gets dropped.
Likewise, the archaeological evidence is 'fact' and the theory of evolution (natural selection) provides not only a comprehensive explanation for the evidence but also a reliable predictor.
It is in the 'prediction' that the ego-on-steroids believers that they themselves are the inheritors and Purpose of all Creation find reason to panic. If, after all, humankind is still evolving then they themselves would lose their self-proclaimed birthright. As a predictor, evolution says we either (1) don't survive and become extinct due to a failure to adapt and select wisely, or (2) we're the Neanderthal to tomorrow's Cro-Magnon.
This runs contrary to the self-centered mythologies of those who'd rape the planet and feed on other living things.

7. I read an article about Fundamentalists once ... |
|
that pointed out that one thing about them is that they think you must be 110% certain about things all the time in order to be right or taken seriously. That's why they have a problem with science. Science should be, by nature, open to new ideas, to questioning everything, never taking someone's word for much of anything. It's a good thing to always question and wonder and test. It's easier for someone with a rational, open mind to think, "Hey, I don't know much about Topic A. Let me research it." And then, based on what they find, form an opinion or a theory. Then, later, maybe they decide to go back and revisit the information again, to see if anything new came up or occurs to them. Maybe they revise their opinion based on what they find that time.
Well, not so, to Fundamentalists of all flavors. Questioning is a sign of weakness, an indication that you don't know what you're talking about. That's why, this article asserted, they are able to toss science in general aside so easily. And probably why the 'flip flopper' tag against Kerry worked with them.
