I'm proud of my father

Long story short, my parents didn't ignore the pro-Bush flyers that were placed on our cars at our church the Sunday before the election. They complained.

In their Sunday School class when politics was brought up again yesterday by the teacher and another class member said that we should "praise God for returning George Bush to office" my father spoke up and told the whole class that not everyone felt as they did. He told them that they were in the wrong place to be discussing politics and that neither political party owns our values.

After class, several of my dad's class members thanked him for speaking up. The teacher came to him and apologized. This morning, the teacher called my mother and talked to her for a long time and apologized to her as well, even admitting that he regretted his vote for Bush (not that he could have voted for Kerry either.)

It's almost seemed easier lately just to leave our church becaue we seem outnumbered, brow-beaten. But my parents are teaching me that we can't allow the GOP to hijack our religion or our place of worship. We have to continue to stand by the values we think are important.

So, yeah, though I've always been proud of my father for his dedication to our family and his wartime service to our country, I'm a little more proud of him today. He's a quiet man. For him to speak out like that means a lot.

Stand your ground, folks. Never give in.

1. What church do your parents attend?
They need to be reported to the IRS. Toute d'Suite.

4. We're Southern Baptist
If I had something with which to prove it, I'd turn my own church in to the IRS. Because, Lord knows how much Christians hate "rendering unto Caesar." Taxes are the Debbil. ;)

Nothing like that happened in my Sunday School class, but in my parents' class, the teacher had voter guides for people to take if they wanted one. I wish my parents had taken one for us to hold on to as proof.

It was apparently an outside group that posted the pro-Bush flyers on the cars, but we were ticked that the security team working the parking lot didn't stop them. Security said, "We didn't know what to do. We don't have a policy against it." My dad told them that the church doesn't have to have a policy against it, that posting flyers on cars is illegal here.

2. You should be proud of him.
And, by the way, if Sunday School Teacher continues that practice, and someone reports him/her to the I.R.S, then the Church's tax-exempt status could be in jeopardy. Places of worship are not supposed to endorse specific candidates.

5. Thanks....good idea
I told him the same, but I'll send it to him so he can see I took the time to brag on him.

He worked so hard in the primary for Wes Clark and then backed John Kerry to the hilt. This election was important to him.
