What Blue Friends Should Do Economically
Definition: Blue Friends: people who voted for John Kerry and John Edwards, wherever they may live Blue State or Red State, who disagree with the policies of the Bush Administration and feel that this country is on the road to ruin due to these policies, and who are flabbergasted/angry/enraged/terrified that 51% of the population can't see it.

Here is what us Blue Friends should do:

1) pay off all debts ASAP, especially credit cards.
2) hoard cash. No unnecessary spending.
3) if possible, put long-term saving assets (IRAs, etc.) in the Euro or gold since the dollar is doomed to crash due to Bush admin fiscal policy.
4) do everything possible to help cushion your Blue Friends and family from the coming catastrophies. Everyone else can sink. They voted for it.

Are you a Blue Friend?

2. Nevada is the red state most vulnerable to a tourist boycott
Visit Atlantic City, Palm Springs, Foxwood, and many more if you gamble. Instruct both your senators to get moving on Yucca Mountain. make an example of NV.

3. purple
I'm not talking about a boycot of specific states. That doesn't work...too many Blues would suffer.

No, I mean boycot known GOP businesses. I also see "no unnecessary spending" as a defense mechinism to protect our own families given that Bush will drive the economy over the cliff.

9. that's a much better plan than "boycott anything in red states"
and thank your for dividing it up into "blue friends" and "red" instead of "blue vs. red states".

4. I have been thinking along these lines.
We put cash into mutual funds every month. But not anymore. In addition, I have canceled my gym membership and plan to limit going out to eat to once a week. We will either double or triple our ready cash fund this way. I haven't figured out how to transfer existing assets, but I will begin work on that soon.

It would be a powerful show of economic might if all 'blue state' friends did not invest for six months. The red staters call us un-American and all sorts of other horrid names, but they like our money fine. I don't know how realistic or effective this would be, but maybe a fiscally more adept DU'er can enlighten me.

7. euro bond funds
There are some bond funds that invest in Euro-denominated govt. bonds. You can use those in many IRA programs. Check the economic section for other ideas.

5. I will continue to boycot Sinclair's products
I've been thinking about that. I assume people still are, right? Those dishonorable people will not get my money. And I'm thinking of finding a more liberal bar. The only thing stopping me there is that I know the owners of my current bar were not staunch Bush supporters. They were apolitical, actually, even if much of the patronage was not.

6. Have you been reading my mind?
What you've outlined is exactly what I've determined to do. We have to prepare for the inevitable aftermath of BFEE policies.

10. Husband and I talked earlier this week
about the same kind of things:
1) stop eating out! (we're really bad about this)
2) cancel cable TV
3) do everything we can to bulk savings

I'm anticipating some very hard times to come.

12. We've been working toward this for four years
Edited on Mon Nov-08-04 07:12 PM by sybylla
Kind of let up when the election year began but will get back to it now.

Interest rates are so low, no sense putting money in the bank. We're buying land when we can and avoiding any kind of paper assets (money, bonds, stocks, etc).

Definitely time to hoard. Problem is, I have two teenagers who will be starting college - first one next year. Won't have much to hoard, I imagine, for about 6 years. But I'll gladly spend my elder years on tuna and ramen if that's what it takes to get my kids through college.

on edit: we're also working towards getting off grid as much as possible. We are saving for a wind turbine and planning possible solar options as well.
