No Retreat, No Surrender
Let me begin by thanking each of you for your hard work and dedication to making Democracy for America such a huge success.
In just under seven months, you have created one of the most successful political organizations ever.
Together we trained over 2,100 activists so that they would remain actively involved in politics; we helped raise over a million dollars for state and local candidates; and DFA, through your generous contributions, we contributed almost another million dollars to hundreds of candidates who weren't afraid to stand up and fight for what is right. DFA also endorsed over 100 candidates who shared the belief that we must start rebuilding the party at the state and local level. We never expected to win every race—we believe that in order to win in the long term, you can't be afraid to lose.
In many races, our goal was to support a good candidate who no one else would support. In doing so, we gave people hope—which is the necessary first step. We won't ever have a future if good people who think about running for office know that only a handful of connected candidates will get any outside support. Over time, we will succeed in getting our message out and we will win—even in the red states.
This year we already experienced victories in the red states with candidates like Anita Kelly for Circuit Court Judge, who upset a Republican incumbent in Alabama, and May Walker who was elected the first African-American female constable in Houston with 85% of the vote.
Although we all suffered a setback on Tuesday, a lot of hard work remains. And DFA—with your help—will play an important role in shaping tomorrow's Democratic Party.
Our challenges both as a party and as a country have something in common: they will only be solved if we each take responsibility for solving them together. We all have to stay engaged and make sure that the party we build reflects our values and stands up for those values when they are threatened.
We continue to ask for your suggestions, and in the coming days we will begin providing our blueprint for 2005 and beyond.Posted by Tom McMahon at 04:30 PM
