http://www.fairtaxvolunteer.org/news/PR092904.pdf

Those tax figures are bullshit. I dug out our tax stuff from last year and did the math. Between my wife and myself we made close to 100K,look at the tax rate they show for that level of income with two children. 33.8% tax?!?!?

Bullshit...We have three kids so we get a bit more off but doing the math our rate is 19.83%. Yes... thats all Federal taxes and all payroll taxes. Hell,Rush Limbaugh probably doesn't pay 33% taxes on an income of 24 MILLION.

There is no way in hell that 23% Federal sales tax can cover the cost of running this country and fully FUND Social Security. No damn way in hell...

1. This is Bush's way of
screwing the poor. Everyone has to buy things. Looks like we'll stop spending money. Glad we barter around here.

2. Well, the burden just flows down
to the people who don't make that much. So, if I'm married with 2 kids and make 35000 a year, my taxes go up under a 23 percent tax rate for goods. That's also on top of the state and local tax on goods and I'm paying close to 31 percent everytime a buy something.

6. My guess is the uninformed will think the State sales tax goes bye-bye
Wrong chumps...thats also added to the 23% Federal sales tax. Around here with the new 1% local sales tax that rich Repukes voted in for a new arena will raise our total to 30.03% on every purchase whether its a pack of gum or a house.

Basically Bush and his Nazis will make even 10 year olds Federal Tax payers. Nice job!!

4. Nope
It'll just make gas $3/gal, Add ~$50k to the cost of a home, etx etx. And they're planning to privatize SS, so the Fed Gov't won't have to worry about it at all.

Of course, such a tax is EXTREMELY regressive, hitting lower-income people the hardest. The rich folk will always find a way to avoid it, too.

5. I had to explain the concept of Regressive Taxation today to a 31 year old
He's a professional, voted for Kerry but liked the idea of a National Sales Tax, but hadn't a clue as to what a Regressive Tax or Progressive Tax was and who they effect.

I blame American schools.

7. I get exactly 30% withheld from my paycheck
but that includes federal, state and local. I don't have any dependents and I don't own a house. Hell I'm only 21 and still in college. But I get a hefty refund check.

8. They have no intention of funding government. Grover Norquist
and other tax fundamentalists have said as much. The Great Society and the New Deal are in their sites for starvation.

9. this is supposed to lower prices and create jobs
since the hidden tax costs are removed. But there are some things that won't be lower like land.

and what happens to unemployed people? they still have to pay tax without any income?

man...college tuition and housing and expensive stuff like that are going to be out of control. I'm scared.

I guess it's good that rich people can't hide from this tax by hiring an accountant...but there are probably other ways for them to get around it. I heard that you can declare yourself a small business and not have to pay sales taxes on stuff for your business.

This tax is something that needs to be debated publicly by knowledgable people. I hope the Republicans don't just sneak it in quietly.
