Do Your Families Agree With You?
I've actually isolated my Democratic mother-in-law a bit in the past month or two because of my beliefs. As my husband put it, "You lost her when you told her you thought Bush was as bad as Hitler." Well, she asked outright! I guess the speed and certainty with which I answered her question is what got her.

My father-in-law wrote me yesterday and said, "Mom thinks that you are taking the results of the election too seriously. I don't. She forwarded your email to me and I find your research fascinating."

So it stands like this:

- Dad & Sister totally agree with me
- Mother & Brother are right wing, fundie idiots and I am avoiding them for a long while
- Husband tries to be supportive, but gets upset when I start talking politics, thinks I'm overreacting and being nutty about the election fraud stuff
- Father-in-law seems to agree with me
- Mother-in-law thinks I'm nuts

So anyone else have Democratic family/friends who think that you've gone overboard in your beliefs?

1. I have family that think that.
Don't worry about it. I focus on thinking of myself as an activist, not a depressed, paranoid person.

If they think differently ... they can Cheney themselves!

3. Shouldn't every leader be compared and contrasted to...
HITLER? How else are we going to avoid another one?

I'm always surprised at people who think it's impossible that anyone could ever be as evil as Hitler.

Oh...I just thought of a difference between them. Hitler CREATED jobs.

6. My opinion on Bush v. Hitler
I told her that Bush isn't smart enough to be as evil a leader as Hitler. Specifically, "Bush wishes he could be as evil as Hitler... Sure he hasn't killed as many people, but I think the desire sure is there."

She stopped talking to me pretty much after that. Literally just shut down. What I want to know is, why the fuck did she ask me the question if she couldn't handle the answer?

7. No
if anything, my husband is more upset than me. We are both practicing mystics, and the spiritual practices have become more intense since the election. Do I think we are in for a major calamity? Yes. Do I think eventually things will come out all right? Yes, but not until a LOT of destruction has happened. Kali will have Her due when people don't follow the straight path.

I don't know if they are as deeply concerned for the future of the country as I.

My husband and both sisters agree. My dad isn't convinced yet, but we're working on him. One of my cousins is coming around. My uncle hasn't said one way or the other, but I'm sending him lots of goodies.

10. Mr. Chamilto is WAY more liberal than I
He's a pacifist, a true egalitarian (when he started his company everyone got an equal number of shares including the receptionist), and would give Che a run for his money on radical philosophy.

11. Of ALL the tensions in my family, politics isn't one
My mother, sister and brother agree with me 95% of the time. My sister is a bit more moderate, my brother a bit more radical, and my mother a bit more resigned...if my father were here he'd be singing to the choir too.

14. Yes and No
The rest of my family is more conservative than I am, and they were happy about the outcome of the election and all. But the division stops at the politics, because we're all human beings first and foremost.

15. Here is mine
-Sister interested and started research last night.

-Daughter #1 calls for updates on lastest news.

-Daughter #2 still worried her boyfriend's service (Army voted for Kerry)vote won't be counted because it was absentee.

-Elderly father very worried and thinks Salem Witch Hunts are in our future. I kid you not...he brought it up to me.

-Ditto the husband, but I think he is frustrated because I have lost all interest in cooking for him.

17. My Parents and Brother....
Agree with me, as do many of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Well one my uncle's is a big time Repuke, he became one in the 80's because of Reagan. He listens to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and those other idiots all day long when he's at work. It's sad really. Even though most of my family are Democrats im probably the most Liberal person.

20. ones with money and jobs-yes, no jobs-no
All of us in my immediate family are pretty upper middle class to upper class and we all are staunch Democrats. We do not forget where we came from. My grandparents didn't speak English and in my mother's words we have - "the evolution of a 20th century immigrant family" have steadily improved and work very hard. We were at the Battle of the Overpass, civil rights, women's rights etc.

On the other hand, the branch that never evolved and still live in the inner city, live on some form of assistance all voted for BUSH.

Can someone explain this to me?

24. Only my mom is a Dem and voted for Kerry
My siblings are all rabidly anti choice and voted pug as they have their whole adult lives. I will not be seeing them until I visit them on my mom's birthday, Dec 23. My oldest sister knows that I hate loath and despise Bush so she does not push me on it. I have a brother in law who enjoys pushing people's buttons so he may push me on it but I'll let all know I am not in a joking mood.

After all if they push too hard they simply will not see me until after the 2008 elections. It's not like THEY travel the 90 miles from Springfield, IL to St Louis to visit ME. I am the one, without a car, who gets on the train to go visit them.

25. We (husband and me) are mostly alone
except for his mom and stepdad. They do think we are overreacting though and their thoughts center around keeping family ties intact. My mother and stepdad did vote for the evil one, and are very concerned that I may "divorce" them and steal the grandkids away to Canada. SIL and my brother are beyond redemption repugs and we're seriously discussing how to deal with being related to them.

I've told them all.............I WILL NOT BE SILENT ANY LONGER!!

If they don't like what I have to say, fuck 'em.

We have, as a party, as a group of people who care about others, spent way too much time worrying about hurting others feelings......

I sure wish I could get a good answer to what would jesus do?

I think he'd slam their little money-changing faces into the concrete!

27. Oof!
My man is an Independent, completely opposed to Bush and also opposed to anything partisan or bi-partisan. He agrees with me on issues, except for this whole election fraud thing, where he thinks I need to take off my tinfoil hat. Says that I underestimate the stupidity of half of America and invested far too much emotion in this election.

My mother hasn't voted since Ross Perot lost. Doesn't care an ounce for politics anymore, though she humours me when I go off on a tangent.

My man's mother changes her mind everytime the media tells her too... She hasn't yet admitted to me who she vote for, but over the weekend when I was drunk and online, said in a message "Hey by the way! Bush won! LOL j/k"... So I'm guessing she voted for Chimpy. Which is odd because seems everytime we talk politics she agrees with me on everything, except for the whole gay marraige issue- but I think she just doesn't personally know any gays and maybe that's why she lacks empathy for them.

My Uncles and Aunts are Evangelists and wholly support Bush and the upcoming Rapture. Or so they expect to be upcoming.

My brothers are nonchalant and smoke too much pot to pay attention to the issues. It will bite them in the ass.

My cousin is a schoolteacher and agrees with me about Bush, but didn't vote FOR Kerry- one of the ABB folks.

28. Everyone agrees in both of our families except my blow-hard father
My husband's family is straight Democrat including his parents, brothers, and their spouses. His dad is in his late seventies and has never voted Republican in his life! My siblings and my mom are all Democrats, and are all very upset with how the election turned out. My mom expressed her dismay at having to look at those "vacant eyes" of Bush for the next four years! lol!

The only family member in either of our families to support Bush is my dad. He is a Savage-listening blow-hard, though, so I don't give a shit what he thinks. Thanksgiving ought to be interesting this year if he is there. :eyes:

30. I don't talk politics with my family.
I like my family. I don't want to spoil the warm, friendly conversations with something so crass as trying to push a particular candidate on them.

I don't really know their politics. Mostly soft republican / moral DLC democrat types, I suspect.

What are those? I don't have ANY. My whole family is a Republican except for my Fiancee. He is a dem. HIs parents are republicans.. I wish I had someone other than my Fiancee that thinks I'm not loosing it. Luckily I found DU :)

Although my mother who is a republican is outraged about the Olberman piece, she is very angry that her party might have tried to steal the election.
