Color me absolutely astounded - 5K Dean signups in 1 day
Edited on Wed Sep-03-03 12:21 AM by Eloriel
I know there've been a lot of Dean threads today, but this just knocks my socks off. Yesterday, Dean MeetUp members got to 99,000 and I was hoping that we make it to 100,000 by the time of the MeetUp tomorrow night.

Look at this:

Open Thread: Day 2
It's been an astounding day -- over 5,000 people joined Dean Meetup today, in preparation for tomorrow's Meetup. 103,248 Americans are now Meetup volunteers.

http://blogforamerica.com/

I remember -- well! -- when there were "only" about 3,000 MeetUp members. Zounds! And there are still people who doubt Dean can be elected?

2. He has gotten people involved very early in the process
For that I will eternally be grateful. I am still not decided but if Dean wins the nomination I will gladly throw my support behind him.

3. This is NOT a bash....
....but in one day, Dean signed up half the amount of total 'meet-up for Kerry' people.

Not bashing...just amazed at how it grew SO FAST!

6. Dean has the same problem that Gore had...
There's no way that the supreme court will appoint him as the next president...

9. But Dean is free from one problem Gore had
Namely, Dean can get people excited, whereas Gore can't and couldn't. The 2000 election shouldn't have been even near close enough for the SC to appoint Bush; in a sane country it would've been a landslide for Gore, and with a better Democratic candidate it would've been a landslide for the Dem even in this country.

Dean looks like he's going to win by clear enough a margin for the SC not to matter.

17. There is another difference
between Dean and Gore. It's called fire in the belly. When Gore din't or couldn't fight back during the recounts, I lost a lot of respect for him.

I wanted him to FIGHT for me and every other citizen in our country. Instead, he acquiesced.

Dean makes me feel that he will FIGHT for We, the People.

10. Hey, that's great!
This campaign continues to surprise everyone.

I can't wait for tomorrow's Meetup. I look forward to it every month. The best part is the new people.

12. And there are still people who doubt Dean can be elected? Yes
dems will need 50 million to win.

It's the most rediculous leap in logic to say that his campaign has at all showed why the 2 thirds + of voters who appose him on every major issue would now vote for him because of anonomous, easily duplicated sign-ups on a website.

McGovern had a very similar grassroots movement without the internet

13. Sigh...
Apparently still a lot of work to do.

While I don't think that Meetup success automatically equals primary success, Dean's campaign has certainly shown the ability to grow exponentially, and quickly...

And as much as his detractors want to dismiss it, any candidate would take his dramatic rise, any day of the week.

14. I'm not saying he's not a strong primary candidate
he is one

but he's a very weak general candidate against Bush, barring semi-armageddon

15. but...
John Edwards is an eminently electable young trial lawyer.

Listen I will vote for Edwards in the general election
will you vote for Dean?

Believe me lawyers are not that popular and there is
mountain of pain awaiting Edwards on the trial lawer
subject.

Google "john edwards trial lawyer" see what comes up
mountains of RNC hit pieces -- and you think this
will be strong in the general election.

I'll stick with the doctor.

16. Go Dean!
I am a Clark supporter, but I am absolutely behind Dean if Clark doesn't run. I might go to the Meetup tomorrow at the Gaslite in Santa Monica, CA, it's less than a mile from my house!

18. Go Dove!
to Meetup, that is. :)

I think it's great to see people with an open enough mind to agree that there is more than 1 appealing candidate in this race. Seems like we are conditioned to believe that if our guy is good, everyone else must be bad.

Personally I like Kerry a lot, and Kucinich too. I could even like Clark, I just don't know much about him yet.

22. Terwilliger -- the "someone" in his campaign
are the volunteers themselves, already doin' their grassroots thing. Or at least they're where the rubber meets the road and makin' it happen. ;-)

You ole positive cynic, you!

we have a goal of 450,000 as we fan out and spread the word.

Our own Meetup has just had a mitosis!

WE now have TWO , one East County and one West County. I'm in charge of Malibu. Which technically is LA County but in reality is closer to Us in the east Ventura County.

Hey you Malibu lurkers! Come through he canyon to the 101 and take it West to Moorpark Rd, then turn right go to Janss marketplace--we're at Coffee N Dreams!

Hey Santa Fe! Howard is visiting YOU tonite! Get there early!!
