10. British Empire, Soviet Empire...And that's just the ones in the last ...
...100 years.
Afghanistan did in the USSR, Israel did it to Britain in '48.

The Telly-Vangelist Lester Sumrall had a "Teaching Series" called "Israel-Where Nations come to Die".

32. before that, we have the Romans, the Macedonians, the Persians, the...
aw hell. Let's face it, the region is a cursed hive of violent religious zealotry and astoundingly uncooperative tribalism. And it's not even particularly choice real-estate anymore.

If we were really interested in a peaceful resolution to the Holy Land thing, we would offer to relocate the Palestineans to some decent mostly-empty land in Montana or Idaho or North Dakota. I betcha most of them would go for it, probably 95%. For the price of a couple Apache helicopters and a fully-loaded F-15, the BLM could set aside a Palestinean reservation twice as big as what they've got now and hook it up with running water and electricity, to boot. Why not?

15. You could have said that about the Soviet Union
not many years ago. I agree, between soaring deficits and the unilateral policy, we're sinking. Other countries will get sick and tired of our aggressive attitude and find other countries to work with. It's even possible that China will start looking okay to them...especially given that China is on its way to overtaking us as a superpower.

Cancer is rampant in the cities. Aids has exploded in the peasant population via reuse of contaminated needles and mass innoculations.

9. I agree
It'll be a long decline - not immediate, but this is the start of the process.

Actually, if a new world order arises relatively quickly, with large regional powers emerging, it may not be so bad. Still, from an American perspective, it's a serious problem.

I don't think Americans realize that, and they won't until it's too late. You can't be the world's most powerful country if nobody respects you. You can't be the world's most powerful country if everybody hates you. Nobody trusts us anymore. Nobody respects us. Lose that, you lose the power.

11. I've been thinking the same thing.
I've actually been starting to question the long term safety of US treasuries. They're generally considered to be the safest investment you can make, virtually 100% safe. But are they really? And if the US government defaults on them, is there anything that would be safe?

But that isn't such a bad thing. Look at Europe. They've had their empires and their bloody wars for centuries. They're settled in nicely, now, and a lot more kinder, gentler and enlightened. I just wish we could learn from history rather than repeat all of its mistakes.

When we run out of money, due to deficit spending (both Gov and foreign trade) and energy costs, the empire will fade.

22. US has been marginalized globally.
This weeks news that Iran has abandoned its nuke weapon program at the behest of major EUROPEAN countries is evidence that there is another way besides Buxh's "invade/occupy" diplomacy.

I believe the Europeans promised nuke power tech as an incentive, but I wonder if there might be a "protection clause" included to convince Iran that they needn't fear US invasion.

Not much about this story in the American "news" media.

42. The debt will crush us
Japan is currently the largest holder of US debt at about $722 million. China is a close second. Our ballooning debt is deflating the dollar, making it less and less attractive for foreign investors to buy and hold US bonds which are losing their value. As a result, interest rates rise and foreign investors shy away from buying T-bills. It is the most effective way that they have of voting against this idiot presidency.
