More Than 100 Journalists Killed This Year

Journalists participate in a ceremony in memory of Maria Jose Bravo, 24, in Managua, Nicaragua, Nov, 11, 2004. Bravo, a journalist correspondent of La Prensa newspaper, was assassinated in the middle of a commotion between members of the Liberal Constitutional Party, PLC, and Republic Alliance, APRE, in the Municipal Electoral Center in Juigalpa.

BRUSSELS, Belgium — More than 100 journalists have been killed since January, making 2004 the most deadly year for journalists in a decade, an international media rights group said.

The slayings of three journalists in recent days in Ivory Coast, Nicaragua and the Philippines pushed this year's total to 101, the International Federation of Journalists said Friday.

"2004 is turning out to be one of the most bloody years on record," said Aidan White, the federation's general secretary. "The crisis of news safety has reached an intolerable level and must be addressed urgently."

1. Line of Fire..
Perhaps if you didnt bring your camera and press pass in the line of fire, these things wouldnt happen. Im very against these people running around and taking pictures of the fighting. If you agree with it, then accept the 100 dead.

3. I'm having a problem w/the lack of news
from embeddeds now as compared to when Furious George first invaded. What are they hiding - oh, yeah, the hideousness of war.

7. It's how you find out what's going on, silly person. I wonder how many of
these were killed by coalition troops trying to keep a warps on the truth? Ever think about that? Remember when the US kept firing missiles at the hotels they were staying at??

What's wrong with you?

12. What the fuck ?!?!?!?!?!
My choice for the most assinine statement ever here at DU and that says a hell of a lot.

So Ernie Pyle, Dorothea Lange, Lee Miller, Margaret Bourke-White, Robert Capa, James Nachtwey, etc., etc. all should have been killed doing their job? And their job is/was to show the people at home what our soldiers are doing in our name. No fuck that. They need hero status in my eyes even more so than the soldiers.

6. And their alleged cohorts, the talking bobble heads on teevee
and the cowardly "reporters" in the major media betray them on a daily basis

9. US Forces TARGETED Media in Iraq
Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 11:44 PM by oldlady
on one day they bombed the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad, where most independent journalists were staying (& they had notified the US of this), the Al Jazeera & Al Arabia stations. embed or be dead--- does that seem like freedom of the press or a respect for the truth to you? Amy Goodman's documentary "Media in a Time of War" includes footage of the guns/tanks targeting the media studios. The press from Spain lost a cameraman & the next time they were all called out to film a speech by the PM, the journalists all laid down their writing pads, microphones and cameras (dozens & dozens of them) and turned their backs on the PM and his staff --refusing to report the story in protest. I first saw this documentary at last year's Media Reform Conference. I couldn't hold back the tears. After, I turned to a young journalism student I had just met and just hugged her and blessed her.

If it weren't for the courage of our INDEPENDENT and FREE journalists we would never have truth.

11. Yep....This was in "Control Room"
Except it was Al Jazeera and Abu Dhabi TV. Al Arabia is the US-created pro-American satellite channel.
