Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 11:17 PM by maddezmom
Thinking it would be nice to have a group where DU'ers could share tips, ideas, thoughts on getting the most out of a dollar. Anyone interested?? :)

on edit: there already was a group started, here's the link:

27. I think a lot of us were!
I found a thread in "activism and events" with a nearly identical title to the one I posted, but it was posted hours earlier. About six others popped up the same day (that I know of). It's an idea that's time has come! ;-)

BTW- have you read "your money or your life" and "Affluenza"? Those books were a huge inspiration to me when I first became interested in simple/ socially conscious living (I just call it "Progressive living" now).

I just this MINUTE got rid of a pallet full of bricks that have been sitting here for twenty years, thanks to freecycle! We have a great group in the Madison area, and I've been so pleased to see some of this extra stuff to go people who really will USE it!

on edit: search yahoo groups for freecycle in your city/area. That's how I found ours.

We're in the process of trying to stop one of the many greedy developers in our area (and I ain't in a red state either). Figured out the best way to frustrate them - we're not motivated by money!! They have no idea how to deal with this, it is quite funny. Frugality is the name of the game. I refuse to be wage slave and have been downsizing my life since April 1999 (when the first attempt at bankruptcy reform started rearing its ugly head. Should have pulled more out the market but hey, live and learn. Paper loss only so it wasn't the end of the world. Not like I'm near retirement age, age of my own choice, not 65).
And I think we need to be green dog democrats, not yellow. Green cause we're financially responsible and care about others less fortunate than us.
Besides, the proverbial biggest gun in the working peoples' arsenal is our willingness to spend.
So have a nice meal during the holidays, spend a bit so you don't disappoint your small children (mine are frugal teens) and don't line the credit card companies coffers. Financial freedom is wonderful - mortgage debt is the only debt I carry. Not what the BANK thinks I can carry on my salary but the amount of which I feel comfortable. I am striving for no student loan debt or parent loan debt for my kids either, what a racket lining the banks pockets. So take long hard look at your financial life, put it on paper, and start your path to freedom.

23. Green dog democrats, I like it. puts me in mind of
"How do you like that?
Has anybody seen a dog dyed dark green
About two inches tall, with a strawberry blond fall;
Sunglasses and a bonnet
and designer jeans with appliques on it?
The dog that brought me so much joy
Left me wallowing in pain
Quiche Lorraine..."

B-52's.

Like your user name too!

30. Have to check that out
I have to confess I've only heard Love Shack but not when it first came out. I like the moniker because not only do we support dems but we are fiscally responsible. Plus I'm holding onto my "green" with a very, very tight grip.
My older daughter opted to vote in MO since our state (IL) was pretty solid in the dem corner for president and senator. Younger daughter isn't voting age yet but will be for 2008. I provide plenty of examples of the hyprocrisy and greed of what passes for repukes today. I tell them the Republican Party no longer exists except for the handfull of NE Senators. I got married during the height of the 1982 recession (25% unemployment rate in my area at that time) which left a very, very bad taste in my mouth.

21. We have one, it just hasn't been posted in the groups yet
Check out our mission statement: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=2684207&mesg_id=2684207

The group will be called "Economic activism and Progressive living". Progressive living was defined in our initial thread as simple, socially conscious living that included penny pinching and recycling.
