"Don't insult them!! Don't insult them!!"
I just heard David Brooks (on CSpan2) repeating a now-familiar phrase: "Don't insult the Bush voters in those red states!! Don't insult them!!" He went on to explain that although they live in long expanses of dull suburban houses, they're really not dull people. So don't insult them.

Okay. Lots of Democrats and other Liberals grew up in or live in long explanses of dull suburban houses, too. Many go to church. Many might say "moral values" mean a lot to them, and many of those might NOT go to church.

But what really gets me is how acceptable it's become to insult Democrats and Liberals. According to Limbaugh and Coulter and others who've made a fortune out of insulting us, we are the root of all evil in America.

And we come in two main flavors of stereotype: First, there's the welfare queen, parasite, lazy, city-dwelling, check-collecting, baby-producing, crime-committing, drug addicted, disease-spreading scourge of society Liberal Democrat.

And then, there's the intellectual elite, hot-tub soaking, chardonnay-sipping, mansion-owning, wind-surfing, hypocritical, tax-loving, rural-hating, Europe-loving Limousine Liberal Democrat.

Inbetween, we have Hippies, "Feminazi's," "Fags," "Dykes," Satan-worshippers, Terrorist sympathizers, Peaceniks, Communists, Marxists, troop-haters, and of course, the dreaded Massachussetts Liberals. And these are just off the top of my head -- I'm sure you can think of more.

And they're lecturing US not to insult Republicans????

2. I had the bad luck of having Jehovah Witnesses knock on my door this AM
I asked each one of them who they voted for. They all answered, "President Bush".

I told them to stop peddling Jesus, because he wouldn't approve. One of the women spit on me.

I called the police, they wanted to know if I wanted to file trespassing charges, which involved in going downtown on Monday and waiting all day in the prosector's office.

I declined. Instead, I put a "No Soliciting for Jesus" note on my door.

60. A little off original topic,
but my nephew and his two roomies repeatedly told
the witnesses that they were not interested, and
not to come back, but they kept on knocking...

Until the day the 3 of them answered the door clad
only in their underwear and holding their pet snakes.

No note needed.

I told them I was a Kerry voting liberal and that they were baby killers. I then told them to leave my property immediately as I did not associate with killers. I closed the door on their shocked faces.

They didn't even leave me a little brochure. :)

55. My sister is a JW.
But she is sane and a Dem.

Usually when proselytizers of any stripe come around, I tell them I won't discuss religion with anyone who knows less about it than I do, and then I hand them a reading list and say, "You may come back if and when you have read all these books."

But sometimes in the summer, when it is really, really hot, I will be sitting outside on the porch with my cats and a proselytizer will come by--sometimes two or three at once.

When they do, I nab 'em. I won't let them talk religion at all, but I start chatting them up about this, that, and everything I can think of. Always they are in church clothes (hot, stuffy outfits, you know), and I can see the sweat pouring down their faces and soaking their armpits. But I stay all nice and friendly and insist on chatting away and chatting away. So far my record is 1 hour and 40 minutes.

I love tying them up like that in the 95-100 degree heat of a Kansas summer. If I am out there with my cats anyway, I am prepared for the heat. Also, I am not dressed in nylons an high heels or in a jacket and tie--and they are.

The ones I do that to never come back. Can't imagine why, when I seem so darned friendly.

Heh heh heh.

My grandmother was a JW, and I had many, many discussions with her There were even candy bars she wouldn't eat because the lethicin was made from animal blood instead of soybeans, or something like that.

Seriously. It's considered an attack if you do it to an officer, or a judge, and for precisely that reason; you don't ever know what's in someone's mouth.

Let someone try that on me. I do own handcuffs, and they would find themselves in them pending a 911 call. And yes, I'd happily go to jail for doing so. My life is worth a bit of time in the slammer.

That goes for preemptive wars as well, by the way :)

65. Blue voter in a red state
Edited on Sun Nov-14-04 02:45 AM by Clark2008
I can't stand to go to church anymore so I "homeSundayschool" my son.

The Mormons knocked on my door once at 9 p.m. as I was taking my son to put him to bed.

After chiding them for not "morally valuing" the lateness of the hour in suburban East Tennessee, I asked what they wanted. The start their spiel and I hold up a hand and say, "We don't need this. I know you have to do it, but it's past my son's bedtime. We have to go."

They ask if they can hand me a tract and I say, "Sure." They hand it over and there's a fairly decent depiction of Jesus on the front (he's actually brown-haired and olive complected in this one). My son takes it and says, "Oh. This is Jesus. Do you know that Jesus died for your sins? His birthday is Christmas, but that's not his birthday, it's when we celebrate it. He died on Good Friday, rose from the grave three days later and that's Easter. Why are you out so late instead of being with your family and and saying your prayers? Jesus would like you to be with your family instead of outside in this cold"

I looked at them and said, "As you can see, your service isn't needed here," and shut the door.

Oh - my son was 4 years old at the time.

19. Like David Brooks, the ultimate insider, has any clue what anyone
is thinking outside his little ivory castle.

But, actually, this is part of the Republican plan to divide America with the concerted help with media mouthpieces, like Brooks. They must keep playing up the "Red vs. Blue" angle. They have no evidence of systematic insulting by Democrats....but they will continue to make this case, ad nauseum, from here on out. They must keep the Republican base convinced the enemy is the Democrats....otherwise, the Republican leadership would be held accountable for the damage they are doing to this country and the 98% who do not benefit from the current Republican agenda.

37. I actually think Brooks is an outsider --
a laughing-stock in the halls of the New York Times because his work is so poor. I think he's a nerdy, insecure guy, who sold his soul to the Right for the money to become a Somebody -- but because, IMO, he doesn't believe a word he says, his columns are risible, and he's still far short of the man he dreamed of being.

(He should have stuck with writing his books, which I find rather entertaining, and sometimes quite perceptive.)

48. Hey Brooksie
I'll insult them all I like, those red state bush voters. They surround me and I can attest to it: they ARE dull. And that's the BEST thing I can say about them.

Oh and Brooksie? Fuck you.

49. It's funny, ya know, if we don't insult them, they call us wimps
Look at the TV they watch, listen to the radio they hear, and what is it? It's wall-to-wall Lib-bashing. They do it constantly, they enjoy it, and they take it as a sign of weakness that we don't.

From now on, we should be on the offensive. The nice thing is, we don't have to lie to trash their heros.

52. I actually think David Brooks is right...
I mean, would you make fun of retarded (not a politically correct term, I picked up bad habits from Hannity- Political Correctness has made this country into a bunch of whiney sycophants... haahah he's so stupid) people? Of course not. And what is a Republican if not a drooling, mentally deficient, automiton who's only purpose is to breed and promote incompetence in all.

Which is a nice seqway into a funny story I saw about Georgia putting on their Science textbooks, "Evolution is a theory, not a fact." HAHAHAHA... ass backwards is the only way to describe the south.

53. For three years, I have felt like I didn't belong in my own country.
Their little mantra of "if you don't support the war, you're unpatriotic and un-American" caused a lot of grief. For three years, we were mocked and ridiculed for our beliefs. During the heat of the election, we were mocked and ridiculed for every single cause we championed.

AND, NOW, I AM SUPPOSED TO CARE ABOUT THEM AND THEIR FEELINGS???? I THINK NOT!!!!!!!!!

54. Insulting them is healthy and historically necessary.
They are an enormous and amorphous mass of uneducated, mentally unstable cowards. They are, like their duce, a shame to the human species. They deserve to be despised, ridiculed and exposed.

56. My feelings exactly!
When Pat Buchanan gave his speech at the Republican convention in 92 the media was amazed at the harsh tone. The cultural war was "not America" they blamed this right wing nutty talk as the reason for pappy * loss. Now we are supposed to think everything is just peachy with these ignorant nuts.

58. I think it's funny...
that they use the word "liberal" as a pejorative. They think they're being insulting with that word, or other heinous adjectives such as "socialist," but I'm left to wonder: just HOW long has the word liberal been an insult anyway? Seems as though it's been so for quite a while.

(And by most conservative descriptions, I should be one of them - I live in a newish house in a newish subdivision in a conservative city, have given up gainful employment in order to stay home with my kids, attend church, teach Sunday school, drive a newish minivan, and cart three kids around to schools and activities. I look just like a could be a "security mom." But no. I'm a lefty liberal. I must really confound them.)

66. How utterly stupid.
I'll say what I want to say, when I want to say it.

When these nasty moronic assholes (like Coulter or Robinson and so on) are allowed to call me names, or even call for my death, then the least I can do is insult them. The same goes for the rest of their inbred, over fed, idiotic sons of bitching followers. How dare anyone tell me differently.

Sorry, I don't own a pair of fucking white gloves.

67. It is hard not to insult.
If you talk to a diehard Republican for more than one minute the urge to insult rises exponentially.

The word Dinosaur will now be known as Jesus Horse

70. David Brooks makes my head want to explode
I used to watch Brooks and Shields on the Lehrer News Hour during the primaries, and feel pain. That guy pisses me off worse than O'Reilly, Limbaugh, or ANYone. He would a few things that were straining to almost half-way make sense and then <kaboom> the stupidest thing anyone ever said would come out of his mouth. And it would happen again, and again.

I swear I felt a mushroom cloud forming over my head every time he would suddenly take leave of any known reality. My synapses would spontaneously tie themselves in knots and self-destruct.

Fortunately, I read ATTACK POODLES recently by James Wolcott who takes Brooks apart quite accurately, and humorously. It felt so good to see that he drives someone else besides me crazy for good reason.

74. Brooks on Brooks
Buckley worries that, somewhere, someone is more prolific than he. He even knows who that someone is: David Brooks, New York Times columnist, book writer, magazine contributor, and PBS talking head. "He's in every issue of The Atlantic Monthly, then he's on the TV show, and he gives speeches on the side," says Buckley, sounding overmatched. "I'd like to know what he's on."

Returning my call from a taxicab -- "I'm just finishing off a piece right here," he jokes -- Brooks is a tad sensitive about his Stakhanovite literary output. "I'm slightly embarrassed," he admits. "It suggests a high level of hackdom." So what is he taking? "Nothing chemical, it's mostly psychological," he explains. "I would explain my high productivity by my desperate loneliness and my pathetic sadness that causes me work to extreme lengths to fill the hollow void that is my life."

80. The right wing has been insulting us for years!
I agree with your post entirely! It's time we fought back and started throttling them for all the bile they throw at us on Limbaugh, Hannity, et. al.

As for not insulting the red states, I can tell you that I am no longer going to insult them with any of my blue money!

I am boycotting anything that I know comes from a red state! No more Kentucky bourbon, no more Texas fruitcake or Georgia pecans. No more Idaho potatoes.
No more trips to red states. No more nothing!

p.s. Don't buy Molson beer any more! It is now owned by Coors.
