God I Feel Like I'm In Hell |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 11:56 PM by Greylyn58
I was just saying yesterday on another thread that with the possibility of the draft coming back I was glad I didn't have any children, but I was concerned for my two nephews. I thought my brother (who was a Kerry supporter) would look out for them.
Well today I found out from my mom that the youngest of my two nephews, Stephen has joined the Marines. He is to report Dec 27 for basic training at Paris Island. I feel like I'm coming unglued and my mom said she cried for an hour when she found out.
Under normal circumstances I wouldn't be concerned...my dad was in the Marines for 30 years and my brother was also in the Marines, but these are far from normal days and I just can't believe my brother let his son do this.
And to top it all off, a good friend of mine just emailed me that her son-n-law - who was suppose to be on his way home from Kuwait - has now been diverted with his unit to Falluja.
God will this madness never end.

3. Is it too late to talk to him? |
|
Is he far from where you live? It is possible to un-enlist, there is a period of time you can back out. I would want to know why he is going, support him if he wants to go, support him if he wants to explore exiting. It is possible. The recruiters don't tell you that. sending hugs....aloha wale no.

but, he's already taken the induction oath last week - I just found out today about his joining.
His reason for joining is he wants to go to college and will be able to on a GI bill. Can't afford to pay for it on his own. He wants to be a chef. He loves to cook.
I'm heart sick.

5. Wow, that's not good, this thing is totally going Vietnam |
|
It's an honorable thing to do, however signing up now guarantees him Iraq real soon. People just don't seem to grasp the reality of the situation, hopefully everything will work out.

9. Didn't you see the bit about the recruiters in MM movie F9-11? |
|
I have had people with draft age children who have told me that their children have been recruited and the devils brigade is getting really good at it.

from my mom is that he and a friend were at his old High School for a football game (my nephew is 21) when they were approached by a couple of recruiters who were working the crowd. His friend joined to, but won't be going till next June because he is still in High School. He'll be 18 by then.

13. According to my daughter, when a draft seems concretely in the works, |
|
my son-in-law will go ahead and join. She says he believes it will keep him out of the worst of it. Supposedly, draftees get the worst assignments, I guess. He comes from a military family too. One of his brothers just finish basic training in the Navy.

That sort of worked back then when we actually had a military that we took care of. Right now our warlords consider our soldiers expendable. Only the ones who survive might be rewarded with looting and that is doubtful. Bush has changed our military tradition into one of shame.

16. I know. I am really worried about all this. |
|
I wanna take him away when the time comes. WHEN it does come, who knows what we will really do? I do believe we'll find out, though. Unfortunately.
