Scapegoated Sixties
Scapegoated Sixties:
by Liberalynn

Newspaper headlines read,
teens rampaging through the streets.
Cops retreating, scared to respond.
Where or when did it all go wrong?

Theories juggled like balls in the air,
fascinating while defying gravity,
dull when crashing on reality's ground.
Where and when did it all go wrong?

Someone has to be to blame!
It's the parents, but not the fathers.
Just the mothers, they should stay home.
Where and when did it all go wrong?

Damn that sixties' authority defying decade.
Those hippies not willing to kill or die.
They're the ones raising today's deviant kids.
Where or when did it all go wrong?

Ah for the fabulous fifties, what a time.
People knew their proper place,
No round holes trying to fit into square pegs.
Where and when did it all go wrong?

Reagan's eigthies tried to restore order.
Let the starving starve feel no sympathy.
Survival of the holier than thou.
Where and when did it all go wrong?

Liberals won back the Presidency though.
Bubba wants to take guns away from citizens,
teach hoodlums to read, knowledge is dangerous.
Where and when did it all go wrong?

Where and when did it all go wrong?

This is a poem I wrote after reading the editorial page in our paper back in the nineties. It contained a few letters about some teens in our community who vandalized on Halloween night and what appeared to be the lack of police response. Also in this same section there were some letters from RWingers about "moral values" and their attacks against President Clinton. I was taking a Creative Writing class at the time and wrote this poem as part of my assignment. I post it here now because I think I see relavance to what is going on now.

My professor had written on my paper when he handed it back: "No wonder Plato didn't you in his perfect society. It's you damn poets who are the problem."
